In fallout from $3.5B error, voters could be asked to take SC's chief accountant off the ballot

COLUMBIA — In the wake of a $3.5 billion bookkeeping blunder, senators are seeking voters’ permission to permanently remove South Carolina’s chief accountant from the ballot.

A resolution unanimously approved Tuesday by the Senate would ask voters if the state’s comptroller general should be appointed by the governor rather than popularly elected every four years. The question of whether to amend the state constitution and make the office a Cabinet position would be put to voters in November.

A perfunctory vote Wednesday will send the legislation to the House. Supermajority approval in both chambers is required for constitutional referendums.

Sen. Larry Grooms called the Senate vote a “strong signal” of support for the change.

The Bonneau Republican has led the investigation into the $3.5 billion accounting error that accumulated over a decade before a junior staffer in the office of then-Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom discovered it. That investigation continues, this time with an eye to related financial mishandlings in the office of state Treasurer Curtis Loftis.
