Trump's campaign demanded Biden apologize for declaring Easter as "Trans Visibility Day," but the former president's own former advisor blew apart that claim by showing that the date for Trans Visibility Day was set 10 years ago and Biden wasn't involved.

"We call on Joe Biden's failing campaign and White House to issue an apology to the millions of Catholics and Christians across America who believe tomorrow is for one celebration only," the statement says.
Bloomberg columnist Matthew Yglesias asked, "Is Trumps campaign drawing a distinction here between 'Catholics' and 'Christians?'"

It was no accident, he probably thinks they are different. Yet, didn't he appoint three Catholics to SCOTUS?

(26,599 posts)Did Mitch McConnell Distinguish 'African Americans' From 'Americans'?
YES
McConnell: Well, the concern is misplaced, because if you look at the statistics, African-American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans.

Apparently MF45 didn't get the memo saying that
conservative Christians are supposed to be on same team.

(38,339 posts)Remember, his background is New York City. Making a distinction between Catholics and "Christians" (meaning certain varieties of, shall we say, "religiously correct" Protestants) is not something you readily pick up in that environment (although with Fred Trump as a father, I guess anything is possible).
That distinction is a lot more prominent in heavily Protestant fundamentalist/evangelical areas, where anti-Catholic propaganda that may as well come from the 1500s is part of the landscape.
Whoever wrote that for Trump worded it -- either by reflex or in an attempt to cater to certain parties -- to take the radical evangelical position. Catholics were "on the same team" by being mentioned at all.

(38,824 posts)I'm always am amazed that when Trump says something people assume he made it up out of whole cloth, without checking to see if it is a real thing. (Not just you - the author of the tweet, the OP, others in this thread, etc.)
One of many references for the concept: https://g3min.org/roman-catholicism-is-not-christianity/

(15,645 posts)(Catholics not Christians) does not immunize it from being hopelessly ignorant twaddle.
And - when emanating from the mouth of Trump - who is about as clueless and shorn of religion as anyone we have ever seen in high office - it become doubly ignorant and artless twaddle.

(4,883 posts)I accompanied my Baptist sister to church as her caregiver. When she was in Idaho the words from the pulpit fought with the Mormons. When we moved her to Ohio, I was thankful, thinking the message would cease .oops it turns out the Catholics were not real Christians. It never ends!

(38,339 posts)A lot of Catholics have never been directly exposed to that sort of stuff, and it comes as quite a shock. Particularly when they realize that much of the talk about "Christian values" was coming from people who didn't include them as Christians.

(6,685 posts)Seriously, they will keep fighting to see who gets the most power. I don't think it will get as bloody as the Protestant-Catholic wars of the past, but there are a lot of hidden feelings that will be allowed to come out. I remember my parents being appalled when John Kennedy was running because he was a Catholic and "a Catholic should never be president because they can't be trusted." My parents were upper middle class, college educated and considered themselves relatively liberal for republicans. All hatred and those feelings went back underground after Kennedy was elected. When strong feelings are simply pushed down and not acknowledged they don't go away, they just wait for another opportunity to fight.

(4,883 posts)Our village decorates for Winter holidays and this year for the first time our Postmaster decided to join the festivities. Greenery and bows were set and all was well. Easter rolls around and out came some type of egg signs or bunnies or some such thing that clearly defined Easter. The postmaster was asked to take the decorations down due to the religious nature on government buildings. Well did that stir up half of the people. The decorations were removed but the disgruntled on the local FB page keep bringing up the issue. This week a local woman died. She was an outspoken soul. This morning on the post office lawn there is a life size cardboard cut out of this woman, propped in a lawn chair. Easter eggs hang from the bushes and trees with signs reading Happy Easter and Please take and egg. Inside the eggs are bible verses. In the center of town a dead woman cut out sits. It is really something. The persecuted carry their perceived slight forever. I too think when the violence begins it will get ugly fast!
