My own favorite creation of an obsessed folk artist is the Watts Towers, http://www.wattstowers.us/

Slab City near the Salton Sea features Salvation Mountain, another huge installation by a slightly cracked and obsessed folk artist. http://funworth.blogspot.com/2009/11/salvation-mountain-man-made-mountain.html

I really like gritty folk art better than the more refined things out there. It's the only art genre that isn't derivative since it's being done by people who are more than a little eccentric, who have never had art classes, and who pull the ideas 100% out of themselves. The huge installations are always surprising and rarely predictable in the slightest.

Here in NM, there is an abundance of public art on main streets. Much of it has a folk art component and all of it is a lot of fun.
