KONTAN.CO.ID - UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (Reuters) - The Palestinian Authority wants the United Nations Security Council to vote this month to make it a full member of the world body, the Palestinian U.N. envoy told Reuters on Monday, a move that can be blocked by Israel's ally the United States.
Riyad Mansour, who has permanent observer status in the U.N., made the Palestinian plans public as the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza nears a six-month milestone and Israel is expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Mansour told Reuters that the aim was for the
Security Council to decide at an April 18 ministerial meeting on the Middle East, but that a vote had yet to be scheduled. He said a 2011 Palestinian application for full membership was still pending because the 15-member council never took a formal decision.
"The intention is to put the application to a vote in the Security Council this month," he added.

(22,649 posts)For the PA to hold internationally monitored elections before full membership? I believe it has been a while since Palestinians have had a chance to vote for their leaders.

(22,649 posts)Full membership is a two way street. There would be encouragement for dialog rather than terrorism as statecraft.

(54,873 posts)a two-state solution of both Israel and Palestine.
Would this measure pass if the U.S. abstained?
David__77
(24,656 posts)It would probably be a brilliant political move (domestically) to abstain, actually.

(33,424 posts)How many have embassies in "Palestine" and where do they have them?

(33,424 posts)Those are not official recognition of a nation of Palestine. Your link even lists Israel as one of the nations. They are a list of nations which have talking relations with the Palestinian Authority.

We have an embassy there, and they have one here in Stockholm.
I hope this passes in the UN.
Btw
One of our (Swedish) major 20th century diplomats, and a key UN negotiator in the 1948 peace talks, Folke Bernadotte, was assassinated by the paramilitary Zionist terrorist group Lehi aka the Stern Gang (who morphed into part of Likud later) whilst pursuing his official UN duties in Jerusalem, September 1948. Yitzhak Shamir, one of the leaders of the terrorist thug Stern Gang, served 2 terms as Israeli Prime Minister under the Likud banner.
Folke Bernadotte was famous for negotiating the release of around 31,000 Danish Jews and non-Jewish prisoners from the Nazi German Theresienstadt (present day Czech Republic) concentration camp in 1945.
Hell of a way to be repaid.

(34,209 posts)But, they haven't held elections because Hamas would run them off.
Last time Palestinians were polled the PA were at about 5%. They are extremely unpopular for whatever reason. But I believe it is because the PA recognizes Israel and a few other things.
edhopper
(37,338 posts)would they represent Palestine in the UN.
Would it only be the PA and no one from Hamas?

(34,209 posts)They don't like the PA at all.
Hamas does not want a two-state solution.
I'm all for it, if the PA supports it. However, the PA has been marginalized. Heck Hamas considered Arafat a sell-out.
I'm afraid this is another "not going anywhere" proposal. I hope it does pass. I feel it will bring peace if the Palestinians are somehow united. I feel autonomy will help them, but they need to agree somewhat on it. Hamas likes the martyrdom roll too much.
