Israeli army says it dismissed two officers over aid convoy strike

The Israeli military says it has dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles in drone strikes in Gaza that killed seven aid workers on a food-delivery mission, saying they had mishandled critical information and violated the army’s rules of engagement.

The findings of a retired general’s investigation into the Monday killings marked an embarrassing admission by Israel, which faces growing accusations from key allies, including the US, of not doing enough to protect Gaza’s civilians from its war with Hamas.

“It’s a tragedy,” the military’s spokesman Daniel Hagari, told reporters. “It’s a serious event that we are responsible for and it shouldn’t have happened and we will make sure that it won’t happen again.”

The officers were convinced that the scene they had witnessed resembled previous attempts by Hamas militants to seize humanitarian aid in Gaza, the officials said.

Potentially more gaslighting. "We'll get right on that, sir!"

Even if they follow through with their words, there will need to be humanitarian groups that are willing to go back in knowing that they could also end up slaughtered.

While waiting for a humanitarian group or foreign military to resume aid delivery, Israel could be delivering aid themselves. I truly hope they are already delivering aid themselves because otherwise it just furthers the narrative that they are intentionally killing aid workers.

Thanks for sharing that update though.

A meeting of the security cabinet late on Thursday approved immediate steps to increase humanitarian aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, a statement said.

In addition to reopening the Erez crossing point, which has been closed since it was destroyed during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, the security cabinet also approved increasing Jordanian aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing point, the statement said.

The move was welcomed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who said the impact of the move would have to be measured in an improved situation on the ground in Gaza, where aid agencies have warned of an increasing risk of famine.

The Israeli port of Ashdod, five miles away from the Erez crossing, will be opened for aid deliveries too.

What we’re not seeing in the report is whether there are going to be any legal prosecutions against the [dismissed military officials.]

That might come in the future, but it’s certainly not contained in the report.

What we’re getting is dismissals and military reprimands. But that’s not necessarily justice for the family and friends of the people who died.

They’ll be rewarded later when no one is paying attention, though in reality a majority of Israelis favor starving Palestinians (at least according to Ruth Marcus in the Post after her recent visit to Israel).
