(23,680 posts)Funny thing is, I had a new neighbor move in to the garden apartment right below me in my co-op a few days ago, and at first I thought it was heavy furniture being rolled in from outside.

(43,268 posts)A standard homeowners insurance or renters insurance policy doesn't cover earthquake damage, as earthquakes aren't covered.

(15,522 posts)It rattled quite a bit for a few seconds. When it first started, I thought a tree had fallen nearby,

(63,104 posts)I've lived in NYC, Manhattan, twice, and hate to think what it would be like if there was a quake strong enough to make buildings collapse.

(2,197 posts)But, I'm sure in NJ this can be very scary when the earth below your feet starts moving and you hear a boom.

(27,322 posts)remember the only one I've ever felt back in the early mid '80s.
Bc the apt building was partly on a hill with a gigantic balcony that acted like a sound & even vibration amplifier - I woke out of a dream yelling, "Earthquake!!!". Heard medium rumble & felt vibrations fade away.
Since that couldn't be true I thought it was a heavy truck passing below which would have had a fairly similar effect - although while the sound wasn't loud; it felt ?"vaster". Went back to sleep (a weekend)
Woke up 2-3 hours later. Turned on my rock station. DJ was playing "Shake, Rattle, and Roll"! Then said,
"Well, did you feel the earthquake this morning?!".
Me: Mouth Open!!!!!
That one was closer in Yonkers, and I lived in waaaay upper Manhattan Washington Hgts.
