The US is on high alert and actively preparing for a significant attack within the next week by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region in response to Mondays Israeli strike in Damascus that killed top Iranian commanders, a senior administration official tells CNN.
Senior US officials currently believe that an attack by Iran is inevitable a view shared by their Israeli counterparts, that official said. The two governments are furiously working to get in position ahead of what is to come, as they anticipate that Irans attack could unfold in a number of different ways and that both US and Israeli assets and personnel are at risk of being targeted.
A forthcoming Iranian attack was a major topic of discussion on President Joe Bidens phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
As of Friday, the two governments did not know when or how Iran planned to strike back, the official said.
A direct strike on Israel by Iran is one of the worst-case scenarios that the Biden administration is bracing for, as it would guarantee rapid escalation of an already tumultuous situation in the Middle East. Such a strike could lead to the Israel-Hamas war broadening into a wider, regional conflict something Biden has long sought to avoid.

(1,739 posts)Yes, Iran is the enemy, but Bibi is harming our country's standing and is the greatest cause of antisemitism in the world today. He also has meddled in our domestic politics, and he downright insulted Obama when he spoke to Congress. He is on the side of the promoters of his garbage, THE GOP, and to hell with him!

(3,311 posts)I can understand why the Israelis targeted who they did. Making the hit on a diplomatic facility to do it clearly crosses a line that was stupid to cross. Opening diplomatic missions as targets was not a can we needed opened.

(56,442 posts)which widened the war. Of course there's going to be an attack by Iran.
Warmonger Netanyahu sure causes the US and his own nation a lot of trouble.

(33,147 posts)They kill Americans but they should not be killed?
brush
(56,442 posts)of course there's going to be retaliation.
Did you not get that? Warmonger Netanyahu widened the war , thereby bringing even more trouble for Israel and the US.
Now Israel, and possibly the US too, will have to retaliate to the retaliation, and on and on...who knows if another country will get involved.
It's the last thing needed. And btw, it happened on the same day the Netanyahu okayed the hit on the World Central Kitchen vans.
Some ally he is.

(33,147 posts)They are going to other countries to do it. That is why the Iranian military commanders were in Syria. To kill Americans. They are the ones widening the war.
I don't happen to think any Americans should be in Syria or Iraq. They are not wanted there.
I really doubt an Israeli prime minister is involved in air targeting in Gaza.
brush
(56,442 posts)then retaliation to the retaliation and on and on.
The last thing the region needs.
And what does this even mean?
"I don't happen to think any Americans should be in Syria or Iraq. They are not wanted there."
Where do you get Americans are in Syria?

(5,553 posts)Iran's sponsorship of the terrorist groups onvovled in this conflict is what made them a legitimate target.

(56,442 posts)and then the war is now not just in Gaza, it has spread to Syria, attacks in Iran by Israel, attacks in Israel by Iran and on and on. And who knows what other country gets involved.
It's no longer localized in Gaza.
And the US forces get in, all hell go break loose.
Warmonger Netanyahu does it again.

(5,553 posts)You don't seem to want to accept that, we are backing Israel in the war against those responsible for 10/7 and Iran is one of those.

(33,147 posts)A mistake in my view.
Why are there still American troops in Syria?
This is a classic forever war.
US troops are fighting ISIS in Syria. But Congress hasnt approved it, the public hardly knows about it, and its not clear under what conditions the US would leave.
Americans tend to only be reminded of the 900 US troops and hundreds of contractors stationed there when they came under attack, often from militants who have Irans support, or when there is a mishap like this week. In northeast Syria on Sunday, 22 US soldiers from an elite commando unit were injured in a helicopters hard landing due to a technical issue, according to the Pentagon.
More broadly this spring, US bases have been coming under attack from Iranian-backed groups, with the potential for the US troops there to be drawn into a broader conflict.

(5,553 posts)They are funding, arming, supplying and providing strategic intelligence to all four terrorist groups involved with current war, Hamas, the Islamic Brotherhood, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Iran's hand's are dripping with Israeli blood. Anyone who thinks Iran isn't behind the entire war Is a fool.

(59,811 posts)I am old enough to remember the INTENSE anger expressed by Netanyahu when the Obama administration did not inform him about quietly restarting negotiations with Iran. The anger was because they felt we did this behind their back.
Here, it is obvious to me that Biden has walked a very narrow careful line, supporting Israel while trying as hard as his administration could to NOT further expand the war. Yet, per US statements, Israel did not inform the US on this.
Almost as much chutzpah as whining that Chuck Schumer would speak against him as PM ... after he spoke to Congress against Obama's policy.

(19,489 posts)The US has had every right to pop a few Iranian targets, in Iranian soil, for months now. We've shown remarkable restraint.
If the CIWS system had failed the one time a missile came within 1 mile of impact recently, there would already be craters in Iran.
