Yes, someone told him, or he heard somewhere that aggressively pulling someone toward him would be a show of power, which if done right, might be effective. You're right, he behaves like an 8 year old and is oblivious to the fact that he looks like a fool, even though he see himself on television and can see the facial expressions of those around him. He lives in his own fantasy world where apparently he is strong and god-like.

Remember he seems to idolize mobsters, some of whom he knew personally when he was young. He would have seen this little dominance schtick being played out and maybe even had it explained to him by one of the wiser guyz.
