Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders declares state of emergency ahead of solar eclipseThe news release stated that the release of funds aims to ensure the smooth transportation of essential items by commercial carriers during the eclipse. Those include groceries, pharmacy items, medical equipment, goods, commodities, fuel, poultry, livestock, and feed. The decision was made out of caution due to the expected increase in travel to Arkansas, potentially causing hardships.
According to the director of the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management, A.J. Gary, the primary concern is fuel costs. He said the declaration is a proactive measure that allows fuel trucks to work for extended hours so that local service stations can stay fueled.
An executive order (E.O. 24-04) was issued, declaring a state of emergency for the eclipse event. The order allocates $100,000 from the Governors Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to address program and administrative costs, to be managed by the director of the Arkansas Division of Emergency

Why TF would there be an issue for commercial transportation of goods for a few minutes for the eclipse to pass. Why would effect fuel costs!? Trucks do drive at night, don'tcha know. That's what headlights are for.
Seems to me that Sarah is just trying to line her pockets with a little extra cash.
What is wrong with these people?!

(12,582 posts)due to the number of influx of people trying to get the best view of the eclipse. I forget which town, but they said they normally have a population of ~20k, even with vacationers. With being in the direct path of the eclipse, they are expecting that number to grow to ~100k.

(12,248 posts)Huge issue for areas not able to handle the traffic and immediate population explosion. Some areas will have 2 or 3 gas stations, suddenly hit with 100,000 people expecting fuel. People park everywhere, including on the roadways. Emergency vehicles are blocked by parked cars. The grocery stores are cleaned out. Trash, human waste, you name it, all left for the local government to pay to clean up. It's definitely a good news, bad news deal, depending on the area.

(22,590 posts)My husband and I live in northern Illinois, and Indianapolis is the closest place for us to watch the eclipse. We're headed there tomorrow, so I'm paying fairly close attention to the Indiana news as a result. A few days ago, the governor of Indiana announced a that he was declaring a state of emergency due to the eclipse.
It's not unusual for ths to be done when an event is expected to temporarily create a huge influx of people into an area. It doesn't mean disaster is expected; it's just a way to make sure the area is fully prepared to handle the huge crowds, manage the increased traffic, etc.
I just ran across an article that I'm getting ready to post as an o.p., explaining why so many affected parts of the country are declaring a state of emergency for this. Here's the link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/caileygleeson/2024/04/04/heres-why-the-total-solar-eclipse-has-prompted-states-of-emergency-in-parts-of-us/

(34,295 posts)Kerrville is one near me. Look at the parking situation. You're supposed to reserve by today. Who knows if you can get parking in Kerrville tomorrow???? The entire town of Kerrville will likely won't have free parking anywhere. Homeowners will likely charge to let people park in front of their house. Paid will likely still be available due to lack of sunshine.
You really can't park outside of town either, it's all highway.

(33,424 posts)In Canada, Niagara Region chair Jim Bradley proactively declared a state of emergency Thursday in anticipation of thousands of visitors coming to the region for the April 8 event.
Bradley said a declaration strengthens the tools the Region has to safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect our critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise.

(19,374 posts)a spike in demand which outstrips typical supply capacity. Seems reasonable to be proactive.
The danger from this sort of thing is from the Alex Jones types who look at these emergency declarations and say they are part of the globalists' plans to take over everything or depopulate the world or whatever and, with a wink-wink and a nudge-nudge, tell their wacko violent viewers that "it" is starting. See? The evidence is right here! This emergency declaration!

(20,769 posts)Southern Australia, afternoon of October 23rd 1976. I was 22 and into developing my own photos.
I made a filter for the camera out of three thicknesses of Kodak 120 film; exposed, developed and cut into rounds. Cardboard rim, some tape and I had a filter for the camera. I think there were free eclipse watching glasses given out all over the place. Anyhow, I had a pair.
Trusty old 35mm SLR and tripod set up in a friends backyard with a clear view. As the darkness fell, birds made a lot of noise then settled down. Street lights came on. When I developed the pix I had a few really good ones of the 'diamond ring' effect. BW only of course.
As the light came back, birds started up their cacophany again and the afternoon continued. The whole thing may have taken ten or fifteen minutes, from 'dusk to dawn'.

(53,194 posts)The orbital mechanics people have plotted the eclipses path and, as it turns out, Arkansas is going to be a really good place to watch it. Theyre expecting over a million visitors - possibly 1.5 million - to the state over its normal population so
to keep people from draining the states gasoline and food supplies theyre doing this.
While Sarah Sanders is dumber than a stump most of the time, this is a solid idea.
Mountainguy
(2,145 posts)It's a measure to deal with a lot of people showing up to watch the eclipse, of which the path of totality goes directly through Arkansas.
So, if suddenly a lot of people show up in an area that's not prepared to handle them, it can cause a lot of problems and stress the infrastructure. It's the type of thing and any decent government should do before an event that brings in an unusual crowd.
