(9,238 posts)If it was much bigger you wouldn't see the corona or solar flares. If it was much smaller you wouldn't get totality.

(34,028 posts)the sun and the moon itself that create the conditions that are just right for the eclipse to appear. When taking all of that into consideration it's truly remarkable.

(114,650 posts)It's just as well, the sky is overcast, hazy. It's already getting a bit gloomy, got an hour to go to peak gloominess.

(16,385 posts)But I was surprised because it definitely made things less bright and a bit dim but I thought that, given it was 75% coverage, it would be a lot darker.

(114,650 posts)There was one in the 70s that was about 95% in Boston. I popped across the river into Cambridge and ran into a real zoo, morons dressed in fringe, feathers and face paint banging drums to make the evil spirit disgorge the sun.
It's already nearly back to normal here, a whole lotta nothin.
Well, at least the crooked preachers in Tejas got another reason to suck money out of the faithful.

(7,848 posts)So of course we're not in the path of totality. If we were I can guarantee it'd be overcast!

(37,913 posts)It is moving quickly. Theres not going to be any cool light tricks because of the diffusion of the clouds, but I can comfortably see the eclipse.

(25,614 posts)I thought their coverage might be good.... but too much blah blah blah
I mean they just keep talking and talking and repeating over and over.... there's nothing else to say
I feel sorry for these reporters because obviously they are expected to do this... it's exhausting.

(90,327 posts)Portland OR wouldnt have been a decent viewing spot anyway, being so far to the west of the path. But the coverage was interesting and over all, I thought, well done. Combination of scientific experts and happy enthusiastic amateurs.

(39,211 posts)was so dim at the peak that it felt like I was wearing sunglasses inside even though the sun was shining. I noticed a lot of my neighbors were out watching it which was cool. No wonder ancient people got spooked and thought the world was ending. These days, there's no excuse for it. Steve Bannon and his bogus prayer BS.

(3,324 posts)3:15. It's a gold crescent. I think we're getting about 78 or 80% totality. Scattered clouds. Still have a good bit of light.
