Uh oh, MTG may be right. There is a new plague coming

Earthquakes, eclipse, now cicadapocalypse

Billions of cicadas are set to appear in a rare ‘double brood emergence,’ scientists say

In a matter of weeks, they will dig their way out from underground, red eyes shining, deafening song filling the air. It will be a confluence of creatures the likes of which hasn’t been seen in the United States since Thomas Jefferson was president — and won’t happen again until 2245. It’s a rare emergence of insects some are referring to as cicadapocalypse.

Billions of cicadas are set to surface this spring as two different broods — one that appears every 13 years, and another every 17 years — emerge simultaneously. The 13-year group, known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, is the largest periodical cicada brood, stretching across the southeastern United States. The Northern Illinois Brood, or Brood XIII, emerges every 17 years.

“It’s rare that we see this size of double brood emergence,” said Dr. Jonathan Larson, an extension entomologist and assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. “We’re talking about an absolute oddity of nature, one of America’s coolest insects.”

Though the idea of a cicadapocalypse may seem foreboding, experts predict that the two broods won’t overlap significantly, and the bugs themselves, while loud and numerous, are harmless. Here’s what you need to know going into cicada season.

I remember driving by a stand of trees, and it sounded like someone running a lawn mower.

It's sort of embarrassing how rightwingers are scared of EVERYTHING... except climate change, of course. They don't believe in that.

A single brood emergence can be thick enough to make it unsafe to drive. Thankfully, it only lasts a few days.

A double brood is going to be quite a headache. I may invest in some noise canceling headphones, or at least earplugs.

some news reports before the eclipse. I have no doubt that MTG knew about it before she made her "prediction" of plagues following the eclipse.

But MAGAs will not know that and will believe that she has an inside line to divine intentions. They will be convinced that she is a modern day prophet.

If I hear any MAGA attempts to call it a plague to punish America, I will gladly tell them that the punishment is for supporting a rapist criminal.

a total of 5 cicada invasions over my lifetime. Some small branches on trees are damaged that's all.
The worst part is the year before we have the cicadas the ground moles dig the yard up for the cicada
larvae. The last time in 2016 there was far less of them in the past.
