Close knit religious communities, especially in rural areas, hide a lot of sins and bullying. Girls are often taught from a young age the only thing they're valuable for is tending to a house and popping out kids.
A friend of mine back in the 90's went back to very rural Arkansas to help take care of her uncle on "the family homestead from 1834" and got into the local genealogy when she noticed the family Bible may have shown girls being born, but only sons had named or were showed getting married and dates of death. The girls just disappeared after it was noted they were born - until the early 1960's after about 8 generations of entries. Girl children did show up on censuses with names, but apparently after the age of 10, they are no longer recorded as part of their families; next census showed they had either been married off -usually with children of their own, or they just dead-end disappeared from all the records.
And the local church only kept records of their births, marriages, and deaths under their married names.
No female deaths other than the wife/mother under the family name. It was if women were livestock. Valuable only for sale and having kids. Other established families in that area didn't seem to be so misogynistic, but it seemed there weren't a lot of women who made it past the age of 45 or 50 in that region as compared to the men.
Consider what sort of pressure the women in that local area were living under. If the man valued her enough so she would live in relative comfort above the local slaves (and they were well off enough to have slaves antebellum), she probably thought herself luckier than her sisters, even if she had to remain silent about her feelings and desires, and put up with intercourse whether she wanted to or not.
If a girl survived long enough to have it drilled into her that she's only good enough to serve her father, brothers, and other boys, that's what she'll resign herself to do in most cases. And marry jerks petty enough they won't let her read or dress as she might want to. She'll probably also end up resentful or hateful to other women (including daughters and sisters) who have freedoms she's not allowed to have especially if they tell her she shouldn't put up with her man's bullshit and stand up for herself and her daughters.

She was awarded a full ride to college but her parents, primarily her father, wouldn't let her go.

They didn't just rob her, they robbed themselves, imo.

She was so smart, always reading and sharing the things she learned with me. She would have gone very far in college I feel sure. She was the smartest and sweetest person I've ever known.

I miss her so much.

families, churches, local society, whatever, to accept this shit. But it always amuses me to think about the day that woman wakes up, especially if she is in a rural area with lits of vegetation, or in the kitchen.

I remember, in my teens and 20's (wayyyyy back in the Dark Ages), listening to some of the older women I knew, about how they dealt with their. . . shall we say. . .less than perfect husbands. Most enlightening. And I recall two conversations with such men, one conversation mine, another related to me by one of the women mentioned above. She had been having a conversatiin with the husband of a friend of hers, one extremely arrogant pos. He started on the, "if you were MY wife. ." bs, and she said, "If I were, I would have been a widow in the first six months." That shut him up. Another time, another one of these jerks tried to bully me with the "if you were MY wife. ." "I looked at him and said, "What makes you think I would ever be stupid enough to marry you in the first place." That ended that little encounter!
