The fascist the center-right just can't love enough gets to fly the fascist flag on the NYT's opinion page.
President Biden wants the world to believe that the biggest obstacle facing Ukraine is Republicans and our lack of commitment to the global community. This is wrong.
Ukraines challenge is not the G.O.P.; its math. Ukraine needs more soldiers than it can field, even with draconian conscription policies. And it needs more matériel than the United States can provide. This reality must inform any future Ukraine policy, from further congressional aid to the diplomatic course set by the president.
The Biden administration has applied increasing pressure on Republicans to pass a supplemental aid package of more than $60 billion to Ukraine. I voted against this package in the Senate and remain opposed to virtually any proposal for the United States to continue funding this war. Mr. Biden has failed to articulate even basic facts about what Ukraine needs and how this aid will change the reality on the ground.

Little-known fact: Both France and the US were propping up a government serving a Catholic minority that was exploiting and terrorising the Buddhist majority--and had been ever since the French took over Indochina. The Buddhist monk who set himself on fire did so in protest of the ill treatment that Buddhists received under the South Vietnamese regime. Like, oh, the murder of 9 unarmed Buddhists in Huế Phật Đản, to name but one.
We failed in Vietnam because our military stupidly thought they could win a war in a foreign country against a majority of its population. So we did indeed lose a war of numbers there, because Ho Chi Minh had most of the Buddhist majority on his side.

(41,111 posts)And this is why Ukraine will endure in the end, provided that it has adequate support.
Yes, it could and will take many years, but, as Foreign Minister Kuleba has said, we will fight them with shovels if we have to. Russia is right next door so the situation is obviously different than Vietnam, but the dynamic is similar: one side is fighting for its life as a country and the other is fighting a war of choice. Putin is not just interested in a tranche of land here and Ukrainians will never accept a return to Russian rule. This war will continue for years even without our involvment. A full occupation of Ukraine is unattainable for Russia and if a Putin puppet was installed in Kyiv it would only lead to civil war. An achievable victory is a sovereign, EU-facing, sustainable Ukraine shored up with western security guarantees and reinvestment fueled by Russian reparations; what mostly stands in the way is MAGA Republicans, not math.

(15,377 posts)Russia has a massive advantage in troop strength. Of course as Russian military strategy doesnt mind wasting soldiers, they need a massive advantage. But it is a real problem and is why material support is essential.

Russia has a troop strength advantage. That is a fact regarding the war. It isn't even in dispute. So there are at least two size advantages.

I don't know for sure, but this could be a counterpoint to a NYT Editorial Board opinion that was strongly in favor of lethal Ukraine aid.
You could argue that it's important to have the argument against Ukraine aid made by a Republican Senator, since a majority of that party appears united behind that position.
As always, Republicans keep telling you that they're horrible people.
