General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe other day my grand daughter asked me,
Grandpa, what was it like to fight in the Vietnam war, the question floored me as I had no answer for her other than it was horrible.
Are there any other Vietnam vets here who experienced the same questions about our war time experiences?
I would love to hear their answers if not too painful.
Peace out
Daniel.

(2,818 posts)A relative of my brother in law also fought in Vietnam, and I asked him about the experience. He looked at me and said, "You might not think you would eat a rat-but you would".
I was young at the time, but smart enough not to pursue the subject after that answer. He died way too young, among his issues was a drug problem that happened after he came back. He also gave me my first and only ride on a motorcycle, lol. May he rest in peace.

I too had a drug problem when I returned, luckily, I had a great support system in my wife and friends.

Re-enlist, pick your station and get to be a Corporal.
Nope.
Extend, still get the promotion.
Nope.
But he did get a bit upset when I mentioned that I thought about LBJ and his rotten war.
It may have just been a coincidence but I was quickly assigned 30 days of mess duty.
A few weeks later I said goodbye to my four years of boredom and drunkeness and soon joined the demonstrations against the war that LBJ used to burnish his anti-Commie heroism.
3 good friends didn't make it home alive from that bit of man's inhumanity to civilians and other bystanders.
