More than 2,500 people were killed or injured in gang violence in Haiti from January through March, up 53% from the last three months of 2023, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) said on Friday.
At least 590 were killed during police operations, BINUH said in a report. Several were apparently not involved in gang violence, some had impaired mobility, and at least 141 were killed by vigilante justice groups.
Most of the violence took place in the capital of Port-au-Prince, while at least 438 people were kidnapped across the wider West Department and agricultural Artibonite region. The capital's port-side La Saline and Cite Soleil areas had the longest large-scale attacks.
Gang members continued to perpetrate rapes against women and girls in rival neighborhoods, as well as in prisons and displacement camps, the report found.
Unfortunately Haiti isn't interesting enough for protests

(9,754 posts)The $9B authorized by the House just this AM includes substantial humanitarian aid for Haiti. Lets hope the gangs in charge there have the humanity to accommodate its distribution among the needy.

France and the US created this effin mess..
Haiti has never been forgiven for crushing its slavemasters. Not all revolutionary victories are accepted. Haiti Im Sorry.

(12,772 posts)The French were overthrown in the slave revolt of 1791.
The US occupation was only from 1915 to 1934.
Every intervention since then was temporary and to help Haiti.
At some point they own their own mess.

(8,103 posts)We could intervene by invading them and kicking the asses of the gangs, but then we would be chastised for that. Aid workers aren't going to return until it is safe from gang violence. We aren't responsible for that.
There were aid groups in there helping Haiti out, but you can't blame them for withdrawing.
