This is beyond sick. Kristi Noem shot and killed the family's 14-month puppy because it couldn't be trained

as a hunting dog.

"South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) is facing a firestorm of criticism for boasting in her new book that she shot and killed her family's 14-month old puppy because it was “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.

On Friday, the Guardian reported the incident that Noem recalled in her book "No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward," published as her name is being bandied about as a possible Donald Trump 2024 running mate.

In the book, the Republican lawmaker wrote about trying to train the dog, Cricket, to hunt with other dogs. Instead, the puppy went “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life."

She is a piece of garbage, just like the racist, sexist, bigoted party she belongs to.

He doesn't care what people think about Noem. But he does care if people are angry at her and it could affect how people think about him if he chooses her as a running mate.

His people have thrown her under the bus earlier. Leaks about her affair with Corey Lewandowski came from his camp, I believe. It was an attempt to get her "in line."

to train her, or hire someone who could, or find a more appropriate home for her; instead, she coldly discarded a healthy, sentient creature as if she were nothing more than a malfunctioning machine. And then she actually bragged about it instead of being ashamed, as she should have been; she thought it would add to her MAGA creds as being someone who had the "courage" to do something difficult and unpleasant because it "had to be done." Except that it didn't have to be done. It was just easier for her; she never considered the dog to be a thinking, feeling being, just something to be thrown away for not functioning the way she wanted and causing inconvenience. We normal people consider euthanizing a beloved pet who has become old or sick an incredibly painful experience that is reluctantly done out of mercy, and find the idea of killing a healthy young dog just for not responding to (probably incompetent) training absolutely appalling. But Noem thinks it's a sign of strength. There's a special place in Hell...

The alpha personality is not synonymous with cruel or sadistic. The negative aspects of it can result in that, but it is not endemic to the type. Sort of like how you can have people who are in the medical field, and most of them aren't sadists. Some of them can be, because no group is bereft of bad actors. But it's not a defining feature of the group in general.

Maybe he would have turned out different and I wish he wasn’t born to such awful parents.

But somewhere his empathy got gone and he chose to torture animals.

I can’t pretend that is justifiable.

I am glad he is gone because no more innocent animals or people will suffer at his hands. To me the fact he is unable to make others suffer is the good side effect of a terrible tragedy.

Like when my abusive father died I was glad I would not be hurt anymore by him. And I wish he died sooner maybe I would have had a chance to turn out differently.

'I hated that dog': Kristi Noem recalls gunning down family's 'worthless' pup

“It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done.”

She then recounts how she killed one of her family's goats, a “nasty and mean" male that had not been castrated, by dragging him to the gravel pit, and afterward she realized a nearby construction crew had watched her slaughter both animals before her children were dropped off by a school bus.

Pure evil. She killed a “nasty and mean” goat the same day…before her children were dropped off by the school bus.

In our town, there were dogs that killed chickens, it happens.

Some dogs can’t be broken of the habit once acquired - even tho’ the method of wrapping a dead chicken around the dog’s neck and letting it rot would sometimes work.

Nothing is 100%, and some dogs kill chickens.

I'm on a few Facebook pages dedicated to backyard chickens, and every single week there's a post by someone who's lost birds or even a whole flock to either their own dog, or a neighbor's unrestrained dog.

That's no excuse for Noem, because she had the option to rehome the dog, though.

I used to spend some time in south western wisconsin and had a dog that would love to run down to where the cows were if he got put and although the farmer never shot him, he did fire his shotgun once trying to scare off my dog. It happens.

I was terrified that he was going to get shot because I had been warned it would/could happen.

that some context should have been given. That reads an awful lot like a defense to me. Just because some psychopathic behavior may be common in shithole areas of the country doesn't make the behavior less shitty.

Shooting off warning shots to scare is completely different from dragging a helpless animal to a gravel pit and actually shooting them. Taking that poor puppy to the vet to be put down would have at least been humane. Instead, she chose the violent, psychopathic route and traumatized her children.

Which I why I always read what the defense says before coming to an opinion. With that said, I don't support putting dogs down for killing chickens. Only if they bite people with the intent to kill would I be in favor of putting them down. Hell, Biden didn't even have his dog Commander put down, and he bit 24 people.

Update: Apparently her dog apparently did bite her, although that's not enough imo to shoot the dog.

She added, a tale of it attacking a neighbor's chicken while "the picture of pure joy," then recalled, “[She] whipped around to bite me."

Fri Apr 26, 2024, 08:15 PM
Apr 2024

Three good-sized dogs got into the pasture, and had ripped a chunk out of one of our dairy cows by the time my dad and I heard the commotion and got out there in the truck. I hit one of them in the hip with my .22, it went down, and the other two ran off. It was still alive though, so I had to shoot it again, and then my dad went driving around knocking on neighbor's doors. No one admitted that it was their dog, because doing so would mean they'd have to pay the vet bill to sew up the cow's leg. So we had to eat the cost to get her patched up.

It wasn't something I was ever proud of doing, nor something I would publish in a memoir of my life. But those cattle put food on the table. It was an unspoken rule out in the country: if your dog attacked livestock, don't expect to see it again.

Fri Apr 26, 2024, 10:02 PM
Apr 2024

According to Defenders of Wildlife only 2% of loss of cattle is due to wolves (in areas where they are not killed), while about 14% are lost to feral dogs. I would trust what they say because they have a program that reimburses farmers for lost livestock if they participate in a DOW program for non-lethal deterrents.
I haven't lived in a rural area, but have driven through visiting friends, family, or just passing through, but I would say the feral dog problem is largely due to lack of proper care for pets. Many dogs are just left to run loose, aren't properly fed or cared for, and not spayed/neutered. One place in rural MO that I travelled through fairly regularly for a short time, I observed a feral pack that was feeding on a rotting cow over a period of weeks.
But I also believe there is a big gap between people who do things like you did because it was necessary and those that think it is an easy way to handle "problem" animals, like this governor did (and as folks have said, probably a problem of her own making). Of course, she might be exaggerating because she wants to look tough to the nutjobs.

There's something really off about the way she describes it. I wouldn't even be surprised if she made up the part about the chickens. Her reason for killing the dog was that it didn't readily hunt pheasants. It sounded like poor/zero training to me, followed by a temper tantrum on her part.

Also, she shot the goat because it was not neutered and "mean." Well, neuter the goat.

Reading the whole passage this does not sound like a farmer who knows what she's doing. It sounds like a wannabe "farmer" who doesn't have a clue what she's doing, and when the animals she'd collected didn't magically train themselves she took delight in shooting them.

We all know the type.

Back in the day (over fifty plus years ago, closer to sixty , we didn’t hear or see a lot of stuff about ASPCA???, where they talk about taking in pets, etc.

In a small town, giving the dog(s) away with that particular problem was just transferring it to another location. Maybe dogs were smarter then cause they could always find their way home - but relocation was not an answer. Maybe some did relocate to where there were not chickens, but what happened after, don’t really know. Maybe the problem with the dog was just chickens, but who would know and then again there was the chance that the problem might manifest itself against something else.

I just don’t know, hope that answers your question to the best of my ability.

But unfortunately you are asking the wrong person (smiling).

On edit: Thinking, I’m not a rich person but I suspect that part of the rational (if you can call it that) is the prestige of owning a dog (suspect it might have been a pedigree dog). Having always owned or been around mutts, I am thinking that pure breeds require more training and might be more high-strung. Someone that has owned those types of dogs might be better able to answer.

It was a puppy and all puppies have to be trained - and if the dog was a bird dog (or retriever of some type) they would naturally be attracted to birds, and without some training just wouldn’t know how to react, but the attraction would be there.

The dog in some ways was just being a dog.

Republicans usually like dogs because they insist on being in control, and most dogs obey them. Cats don't play that game, and that enrages many of them, especially the males.

Probably in her quest to appear "not girly" and thus retain power and fit in with the toxic-masculinity culture of her rural state, Noem has embraced the cruelty and violence traditionally associated with males. She was enraged that she couldn't control this particular dog. So she shot it. She's a fucking monster.

(I am a huge cat person, but I like animals in general and think dogs and all pets deserve loving homes and good care.)

Fri Apr 26, 2024, 02:37 PM
Apr 2024

The first article from WhyAxis, in the second paragraph, linked to a study in which the abstract states outright, emphasis mine:

Liberals and conservatives are perceived to disagree on most aspects of life, even seemingly trivial things like pet choice. Although the question of whether liberals and conservatives differ in their liking for cats and dogs has been sporadically investigated, few peer-reviewed reports exist, results are mixed, and most reports examine this topic indirectly.

So there's that. In the same abstract, a "negative evaluation" of cats doesn't necessarily equate to hatred.

The second article requires a signup, which I'm not interested in doing, but it looks an awful lot like an opinion piece. The third article states outright that it is an opinion piece. The fourth article is also an opinion piece.

The fifth and sixth articles are about cat lovers being smarter than dog lovers, which does nothing to prove dog lovers "hate" cats or that disliking cats is somehow evidence of dark or sinister personality traits.

The final article's abstract states that dogs tend to be favored by "mainstream American culture", which isn't the same thing as saying cats are un-American.

TL;DR: I think I'll hold on to my skepticism of those three claims.

Cats are sweet affectionate sensual and they live by consent. They can survive
In general (not well)without an owner ,And they don’t suffer the bullshit from assholes. They have claws and will use them. They can detect who is a shitty person and a threat.

Sociopaths narcissists and republicans hate cats and cats reject them back.

Sociopaths and narcissists can’t make a cat an extension of themself that’s why they hate cats. Cats have a mind of thier own and do not submit to anyone unless trust and consent are there. That requires a relationship of equal partners. Sociopaths and narcissists are incapable of an equal relationship built on trust and consent so they hate cats.

How likely is it that she considers liberals to be "less than worthless" too? Does anyone believe that she wouldn't be just fine with rounding us up and sending us to the gravel pit?

The way that Trump can get so many votes after all he has done, and the way he gets such emotional support has shown me how.

Throw in some untimely inflation, or credit crisis, and a suspect person gets elected.

The first time with Trump, it was due to his persona as a celebrity executive.
The allure of a businessman for a leader instead of a politician.

So, there are multiple ways to get one elected. And even when they are somewhat known, like Trump is, their charisma and populist type propaganda can get them across the line when given a little help from unfortunate fate.

There does not seem to be a way to make democracy a sure thing.
There does not seem to be a way to make peace or kindness a sure thing.

I agree, there's no mystery left!

This is an admission of incompetence and laziness, both physical and intellectual.

The dog wasn't introduced to birds correctly; it must be done gradually and in a controlled manner. Especially with a puppy, which 14 months still is.

Instead of killing a dog she had failed to train correctly, it could have been rehomed to a competent trainer / handler or to a non-hunting or chicken-keeping situation.

She was too incompetent to train it correctly and too lazy to properly remedy the problem she had created.

Republicans: the cruelty is the point.

90% of the time, a badly-behaved dog is the result of bad ownership. The other 10% of the time, there's something wrong with the dog's ability to learn a task, or they may have inborn emotional/aggression issues (same as people). Outside of those rare occasions, the onus is on the owner for doing a lousy job training the dog.

I don't know anything about her background, but I would guess that she has the animals around as props. She doesn't know what she's doing. Running a farm is difficult, both physically and mentally. It requires skills. Certain politicians like to pretend that they're farmers but they don't have a clue.

It never ends well when people take on this kind of responsibility without knowing what they're doing. Usually animals die of neglect but it sounds like she lost her temper and went on a killing spree.

Shelters exist. Plenty of people would like to adopt a puppy as a pet if it doesn't want to hunt.

Political commentator Bill Kristol saw ulterior motives about the revelation and pointed out, "Knowing Donald Trump fears and hates dogs, Kristi Noem revs up her VP campaign by writing about killing her own dog Cricket, a 14 months old wirehair pointer."

How we move America forward is by voting these evil people out of office.

But I never, ever wish harm on them. Even I know that her goofy, exuberant dog would have made a wonderful pet for plenty of dog-lovers, especially for a family with school-age kids.

She was just too stupid and psychopathic to have comprehended how other people would have loved to have that dog.

ETA: Anecdotal, but my experience has been that people who have 'uncontrollable' dogs are the problem with why the dogs misbehave, at least 90% of the time. They don't take seriously the very real commitment one must make to have a well-behaved dog, and never mind one that you want to perform a specific task on a regular basis. The behaviours require constant and consistent reinforcement, even at home away from their 'task,' like say, hunting.

Too many dog buyers don't understand that they must become lifelong pack leaders, and not really friends to their dogs, when push comes to shove. Friendly, yes, even loving. But, ultimately, every dog owner must be the leader, and behave accordingly, even when it's difficult.

One was on purpose … acquired from a reputable breeder at 9 weeks (put a deposit on her prior to the breeding… long story for some other day) …. She is the most laid back always loved and trained early girl with no knots in her rope

Two was a rescue … a very large and aggressive Aussie who was some really nice people’s pandemic puppy … restricted to a duplex with no yard in the city … he became angry and threaded the family … 2 1/2 years later, he still has barking at every car that drives by, but is becoming a very well adjusted loving giant

Three was thrown out like trash on a country highway … ended up on my road and my neighbor called me and said “your dog is out and you need to go get it,” to which I replied …. No … all my dogs are home …. needless to say, she is mine and just about the sweetest girl in the world … a little needy, but … oh well …

Dogs are a work in progress … when they have not had their needs met, it takes a lot of love and patience

A Dalmatian named Mikey.

I trained him well despite him being biologically kinda hyper.
My asshole father put him on a chain by the doghouse when I was in school and I was mad about that and told my mom .My mom didn’t like that either so she made him figure out how to make him a better dog run if he is going to be outside for the day.

So he rigged a grid of wires over the whole lawn about 10 foot high up from the ground.
Through a series of taut laundry pole wire ,pulleys and couplers and stuff.

Mikey had the free run of our entire yard and his leash never got tangled because of the placements of the wire system overhead. It was really cool actually.

Fri Apr 26, 2024, 12:33 PM

Old redneck type, and probably a better hunter than anyone you've met. The only time he ever talked about killing a dog was if it kept running deer. (my description: beagles will sometimes lose their mind and run deer, trying to bring them back around, not minding the command to come back, or anything, trending farther away, until the deer dies or they get lost and die, or both. Sounds horrid to do to them, but he never had to. If the dogs wouldn't listen to him, they would mind me.)

He had dogs he couldn't train in his life. They wouldn't want to leave to hunt (too socialized; not independent enough), they were stupid, and so on. They made great pets.

The description, “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life.", tells me she didn't know how to treat a dog or train one. You don't put them away like a tool, only taking them out when you need them (that's what they'll do). They need to be run and trained during the off season so they know what to expect, what to do, and so on.

It tells you everything you need to know about her: she's a complete and utter ass, as well as a fucking idiot.

Until I read that, and started writing this, I never realized how much I learned from him by taking care of his dogs, and going with him when he ran them. And how much I miss him.

aside from the obvious heartlessness and why couldn't she give the pup to someone better equipped to handle it, a good leader should be able to do better with a dog.

Fri Apr 26, 2024, 02:34 PM

is only proof positive of a bad trainer and/or owner. This goes way beyond that. A puppy and a goat all in the same morning. She must have been feeling her red wheaties that morning... and in front of her kids. If I'd been one of those kids, I'd have reported her to the authorities and then turned myself in for foster care (if not just plain run away). I mean, if she can be that cruel to animals, what in the hell is she like to those kids? She killed their puppy in front of them. She savaged a goat in front of them. If nothing else, she is absolutely showing a psychopathic personality. I wouldn't trust her with any living thing -- especially neither kids nor animals. And with her doing this, it's only one step away from murder, psychologically speaking.

This woman needs to be put down, herself. She's a menace and danger to society. Gods, if I'd been anywhere near, I'd either have ended up dead or bashing her head in when she raised the gun to the dog. You can't train the dog? Give it to someone who'll love it as a pet. You don't just kill what you don't like. I can't handle this. I've rescued too many animals in my lifetime. I'm living now with an enormous dog that no one wanted... month after month she'd be adopted out, only to be brought back in and left at the pound. Is she a handful? Gods, yes... especially with her at 100 lbs+ and me at 90 lbs soaking wet. And both me and hubs in our late 60's and mid 70's. She needs the exuberance of kids, which my grandkids will provide at times. It's almost cruel, I think, to keep her with us old people. But she was almost given up on at the shelter. People gave up on her. We're working with her, day by day. And I found her a "friend" who is nearly as large as she is, and just as exuberant, to have playdates with. That's working with the situation. You just don't kill a living being because they're inconvenient or you personally don't like the animal.

I guess it's too much to hope that karma comes for her in the same way Noem went for the pup. There is nothing worse, in my book, as someone who tortures or kills an innocent creature. May the wrath of all the gods, especially the Old Gods, rain down on them. Wishing Cthulhu on her isn't enough, in my mind. Gee... sorry... can you tell how upset this has me?

Sterilize the animal and then let another family adopt it.

The Dems should run story with this and never let it go. That vile bitch showed us where her heart is, or isn't.

Although there are more humane ways to euthanize a dog, it killed the neighbor's chickens. It went to each one and snapped their necks with one bite before going to the next one. The dog liked killing and it was just a matter of time before it bit a child.

It looks bad than Noem seemed to enjoy shooting it, and then there's the goat incident....
I'm not saying she did the right thing, but I wouldn't want a dog that likes the taste of blood. It's dangerous.

Don't put me in the Noem camp on this. She likely ruined the dog herself by teaching it to hunt and retrieve fowl.

She killed a squirrel, tasted blood. So she's likely to bite someone? Lawsuit waiting to happen? How worried should I be? Let me know your thoughts.

If it just enjoys snapping the necks of chickens it probably had a failed trainer.
And tht is what I believe happened here. Noem tried to teach the dog to hunt and retrieve but just taught it to go for blood.

I don't have to shoot my dog. What a relief. So what should I do given she seems to like to go after squirrels?
