Trump tried to greet prosecution witness as she left the stand.

That is something I have never seen before

Who does that? It just appears to be inappropriate.
I never saw that through nine seasons of Perry Mason.
I know the analogy is tenuous because Perry Mason's clients were innocent except for one.

He's so desperate for a friendly nod or anything positive in his direction, he used to pay her to do that, surely she could spare one nod and a quick smile.

And he is so self-absorbed that he doesn't see the impropriety of it.
