Three tornadoes wrecked hundreds of homes in Omaha and Elkhorn, Nebraska, and half of the town of Minden, Iowa, on Friday and there are more twisters expected over the weekend. Hundreds of homes were flattened, ripped from their foundations, or had their roofs torn off when tornadoes barreled through. More tornadoes or on the way this weekend with very severe warnings issued for Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas for Saturday and Iowa to East Texas on Sunday

(16,427 posts)Ive been thru hurricanes but I cannot imagine the pain and terror of tornadoes. These storms and all natural disasters are becoming more intense each year and here, where I live, were just a little more than a month away from another hurricane season. I wish all my DU friends to be safe and sound.

(37,150 posts)We are in NE Kansas. Had two tornado warning sirens go off this afternoon. Hard on the nerves. Two tornadoes touched down about 15 miles southeast. We got lots of wind and rain but safe and sound. Sadly we cant do anything about it because those who profit from fossil fuel consumption are in constant need of upgrades for their yachts.

(2,869 posts)We're here in Leavenworth, watching the weather. It's been about 5+ years since our last one, so I figure we're due. Put the grandson to work helping me clean out the main floor "safe room" for us, the cats, and the dog. Getting down into the basement is dangerous for me. I'd probably break a leg trying to get down the "ladder" that approximates stairs! Hubby thought to put in a small toolkit, I offered up a first-aid kit, and we gathered all the cat carriers. I'm trying to look at the bright side now... maybe we could get a new roof! It's nothing to smile about. I worried all yesterday about a dear friend in Omaha. But you prep and hope. So far, we've had wind and all day-all night rain.
Stay safe Boss... and all you who are "neighbors" around us. From what I can tell on weather.com, we've got another day of weather coming tomorrow, too.

(31,413 posts)for 12 years, from 1988-2000. We were in the basement many times. It is nerve wracking to hear the sirens blaring.
I lived in California from 1965-1988 and was a student at UCLA in 1971 when the Sylmar 6.6 quake hit. My roommate and I thought it was the end of the world. The shaking seemed to go on forever.
But it wasn't until we moved to NC that we experienced a tornado going right over us one Saturday afternoon in Raleigh in April 2011. It really does sound like a freight train.
Stay safe all you DU'ers in Tornado Alley!

I wish them all a better life ahead.
