(306 posts)His type of humor is best handled in short timeframes like weekend update, like cute short segments. He doesnt have the cadence or persona for a big audience.

Surprise ending!

(24,096 posts)...there. The audience doesn't seem to be finding him very amusing.
He just wrapped up. I have a feeling he is probably glad it's over.

(3,673 posts)with his heartfelt tribute to his grandfather. Hard to miss with that.

(3,620 posts)jokes on SNL and now at the WHCD are more cerebral and not offensive bawdy and x-rated like some of the other comedians were. He's great - in my view.

(8,873 posts)State of the Union. The Right is just angry and pissed at it all.
I had to turn it off, seeing the smug hate filled mugs of the assholes hell bent on ending democracy, Fox et al, was blinding my blood.
Rather watch the weather tracking tomatoes. Much more calming than watching a room half full of pro trumpers.
The silence after the J6 repeat comment, did it for me.
Turbineguy
(37,396 posts)the comment about the man who set himself on fire outside the trump trial was in bad taste.
But I liked everything else.

(15,064 posts)insisted on continuing watching when we sat down for dinner, so from some midpoint to the end) was bad. Really bad. No laughs. A couple of wry smiles. And some "oh, that was a missed opportunity, if only it had just been tweaked a little" moments. And some cringe -- maybe more than some.
I don't know what bombing should mean in this context. It seems to me to be an impossible situation to be funny. The shit that this country is in at the moment does not lend itself to humor, and being frivolous and avoiding all that shit is also not funny because the stakes don't tolerate avoidance.
Of course, that is why I was disinclined to watch in the first place. This self-important BS from the WH press, when they congratulate themselves for doing what they fail to do daily while ignoring all the ways they fail to live up to their own hype daily, is part of what I hate about MSM/cable news. We are in a world of shit partially of their making and they are blowing smoke up their own asses about how awesome they are, while telling the unfunniest jokes available.

(47,711 posts)It is a really tough gig and the jokes often fall flat especially with that audience. I like him a lot on Weekend Update, but this is a different venue. Of course, I've seen quite a few really funny comedians bomb at the White House Correspondence Dinner, so he is in good company.
That said, I got teary eyed toward the end when he compared Biden to his grandfather. It was very touching.

(4,044 posts)A lot of his jokes didn't land. I heard tremors in his voice. He knew it was not going well.
The routine would have been better if it were shorter.
The end was great, of course.
I like this guy on SNL. I think weekend update is the only part of SNL that's consistently good.

(3,673 posts)Saved his whole appearance, to my way of thinking at least.
It's a weird audience at these things. They don't react much or well it seems to jokes made about anyone other than politicians. Make a joke about someone else in the room and they seem to sit their grim and mostly silent. The tut-tutting and pearl-clutching over Michelle Wolf's relatively harmless takedown of Huckabee-Sanders is a testament to that. Humorless stiffs, the lot of them.
