Law enforcement was noticeably absent when violence erupted on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles late Tuesday night between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
Dozens of counter-protestors, many wearing white masks and flags over their shoulders, arrived around 10:45 p.m. and attempted to dismantle the pro-Palestinian encampment that has overtaken Royce Quad since last Thursday. The agitators lobbed fireworks at the encampment and set off what may have been bear or pepper spray.
Demonstrators on the pro-Palestinian side used umbrellas to shield themselves, and skirmishes broke throughout the night out as counter-protesters attempted to wrestle away wood pallets, plywood and metal fencing from the encampment.
UCLA campus police along with medical personnel showed up briefly before retreating, KTLAs John Fenoglio reported. The Los Angeles Police Department had not responded as of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

(10,988 posts)Pro-Israel counterprotestors started tearing down @UCLA encampment barriers and screamed "Second nakba!" referring to the mass displacement & dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Per @latimes @safinazzal on the scene with another video:

(10,969 posts)I was reliably informed all week that this sort of thing was glorious protest just like the 1960s.
Did that change? Hrm. Weird how things change like that.

(10,969 posts)Because they're tired of the racist abuse?
Isn't that how this goes? C'mon now. We can't change logic six months in. That would be strange.

(13,283 posts)It appears we now have consensus on this issue.
It heartens me to see consensus among DUers on at least one aspect of the protests slowly emerging.

(1,410 posts)But watching it on the local news last night it did seem strange.
A whole log to Khaki paints wearing losers running around. Fireworks being shot into the encampment and zero presense of LE on the lawn.

Allowing the encampment to go on as it did, basically setting up their own securoty roadblocks barring students from getting to class made it inevitable something like this would happen.

(22,695 posts)The protesters are being "inconvenienced" by the counter protesters.
Seriously however, this is not acceptable. Vigilante violence is not a solution; the counter protesters whether students/agitators/Russian agents have no right to attack those protesting on campus.
