Donald Trump has spent years railing against state-level voting operations, targeting vote-by-mail options and spreading conspiracy theories about rigged results in battleground states.
This week, the presumptive 2024 Republican White House nominee doubled down on his election falsehoods and announced his campaign will lead a "historic effort" with the Republican National Committee and GOP state parties "to ensure that what happened in 2020 will never happen again."
The former president's latest comments came during his Wednesday campaign rally in Michigan, a critical swing state that Trump traveled to during a day off from his New York criminal trial over allegations surrounding payments to an adult film star to keep her quiet about an affair before the 2016 presidential election. Turning to the integrity of the 2024 election that Trump is trying to win to return to the White House, the Republican sought to portray Democrats as incompetent at anything but rigging elections and repeated false claims that votes were illegally counted the first time he faced off against now-President Joe Biden.
"We're going to watch them like hawks," Trump said.

Are you going to pay their bills when they get arrested for election interference? I didn't think so,

(113,971 posts)They are often so poorly educated or overtly obnoxious/belligerant that I would have a very hard time seeing them last beyond the attempts to train and orient them.
I'm sure there are exceptions, but... Granted I'm used to Colorado and we have a pretty well-educated population--especially middle-aged and older workers who tend to volunteer--but still...

(11,419 posts)My sister is an election worker - 5 AM to 10 PM on election day, often in a poorly heated building. I don't think a lot of magats have the stamina for it - assuming they make it through the training.

Props to your sister. I can no longer do the work.

(37,535 posts)The only time I saw a serious screw-up, rather than a "Oh, the instructions meant that?" screw up, was when a former party chair was elected precinct chair for the election.
This just meant that before the polls opened on election day we were asked to be who'd be in charge.
When a provisional ballot was needed, he insisted (when he was present) on walking the voter through NY's "affidavit ballot" process. That meant most of the day.
Late afternoon, another newbie poll-worker asked to follow along. He took the district-provided flipcard and did the "follow the bouncing ball" thang. He followed along. And near the end the newbie objected. "It says they sign the inside, not the outside, envelope." Or something like that. 40, 50 voters with such ballots had been deposited. "That's the way I've been telling them." "No, the flip-card's clear. Gives pictures."
The newbies was right. The former party chair had invalidated probably 50 (give or take 5) votes.
The former Democratic Party Chair had only insisted on handling (D) votes because he didn't trust (R) poll workers to be honest. He said. He was in charge, it was his decision. But he'd also handled all the (R) voters in a (R) majority district. Meaning he invalidated more (R) voters--probably, not for sure--votes than (D) votes.
Now, he was shocked to realize what he'd done. The district was still (R) majority, but the election was decided by far more than my polling place's turnout, much less the (D)-(R) difference. A loon would say this was a conspiracy. I trust he shocked look as he realized he'd disenfranchised his (new) neighbor. In Brighton, NY.

(53,544 posts)It would be an issue to check out.
Especially if the precinct chair gives the instructions to the voter.
In our state we have an Inspector from the political party receiving the most votes in the for Secretary of State. A judge from Democratic and Republican party. And a clerk from Democratic and Republican party. There may be additional judges and/or clerks.
When there are issues the Inspector and the Judge from the opposite party review it.

(53,544 posts)When they find out they have to be there from at least 6 am till 9pm? Attend training classes? Bring their own food? Provide their SSN? And there will likely be at least one experienced election worker that may challenge them.

An election observer could but likely would be difficult. Most likely would be removed if he became a pest.

(53,544 posts)The signal would have to easy to understand.
But once a voter is confirmed with voter ID and voter confirms the information it would be difficult to challenge.
