They've been told that America is being undermined by "them" since the Birchers, if not before.
They've been told that "law and order" (a.k.a., repression) is essential since Goldwater, if not before.
They've been told that racism is good again, since "Nixon's Southern Strategy," if not before
They've been told to hate government since Reagan, if not before.

And then came hate-radio shock-jocks like Limbaugh to give them "real American" opinion (loudly), corporate oligarchs like Murdoch to tell them the "real" news and pro-authoritarian fundamentalist (TV) churches to reinforce it all. All made possible by media deregulation and unregulated tech (like cable TV). And then came a game show host, who played a successful businessman on TV, to be their messiah. They view/consume nothing else.

There has been little directed at countering any of this, assuming it can be and/or that there is really any will to do so. Anyone remember Air America? Didn't think so.

Add that to the torpedoing of funding for a quality in public education coupled with the "vouchers"/privatization/home-schooling movement, not to mention the "teach-to-the-test" mentality of No Child Left (Behind), and it is probably more amazing that there aren't more of them.
