When I was growing up in an evangelical family in the 70's & 80's, they still reviled Hitler and Russia.

Nowadays, it seems like Hitler and Russia are not only acceptable but have become role models for the MAGA extreme of the GOP...

Have had them tell me how we need to get back to God like Putin. He has enlisted the Orthodox Church and sells the war as an apocalyptic fight against the godless West. ‘Communists” were atheists (never mind he was a KGB leader and avowed Communist)

My family wasn't evangelical but the great majority of the people around us were. Extremely conservative Southern Baptists, Church of Christ members, and Pentecostals. Generally they didn't consider Catholics to be Christians. They hated Russia, but it seemed to me that the biggest problem they had was the communist economic system. I rarely heard them say anything about the lack of freedom of religion, and the general opinion seemed to be that a Strong Leader was better than a democracy where the poor people would vote to bankrupt the government by voting for politicians who would give them unlimited benefits.

They seemed not to like Hitler, of course many of their parents had fought in the war, but they certainly admired his power.

I'm sure that evangelicals in different areas of the country were different. From what I saw back then I'm not surprised in the least about what I'm seeing now from the Republicans, only that the corporate 20% of the Republican party was able to keep the authoritarian 80% in line for so long.

That, to me, is the main reason. They are going to vote Republican regardless of the reason they give.

Patriarchy is a constant in almost every religion. He was a return to all they can fathom - white male dominated power. Trump used Fox against Murdoch to get the nomination.

Have been like this for generations. I recall arguing with some girl in high school about evolution, in 1974. Goldwater talked about in 1964. Just keep on heading back, all the way back to Galileo and before.

The best hope is that there are fewer of them after deaths from old age, COVID, and other natural causes and that their offspring, because of more readily available information and less likelihood of remaining in a cloistered bubble their entire lives, will realize many of their religious leaders are full of shit and leave Evangelicalism behind.

they have gone that extra yard with blind Shitler support & worship. Their basics of misogyny, racism, LGBTQ hatred, marriage of church & state, anti-science, climate denial, school prayer, anti-government, pro-gun, etc. are now on steroids in order to keep up with the Nodfather's constant escalation of rage, cruelty, and hate.

For every hundred evangelicals hostile to the Civil Rights Movement, there were zero evangelicals who supported it (just about). They don't seem to be keen on interracial marriage. They vote mostly for white candidates who believe white lives matter first. They espouse the notion of Christian nationalism which is simply white nationalism with a sanitized name.

Trump just completely exposed them.

if they don't convert. Same with all other religions. They believe this is part of what makes them better than everyone else.

and that's the same for all the maggots and Nazi followers. He made them feel good about their ideas whereas before, they were more subdued because they were on the wrong side of America.
