Bernie Sanders will run for re-election

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the 82-year-old progressive icon, announced on Monday that he will run for re-election.

Why it matters: Sanders would continue to be the top progressive voice on Capitol Hill as Congress confronts massive policy battles over taxes and navigates social unrest over the Israel-Hamas war.

People around Sanders have not given any indication that he is retiring, and say they are approaching 2024 as an election year for the senator.

There was doubt that Sanders would seek re-election given his age, and he has yet to publicly announce a decision. He has until May 30 to file for re-election.
