WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama is adding an asterisk to his name in the history books.
His inauguration will be only the seventh time that the constitutionally mandated date for a president's swearing-in Jan. 20 has fallen on a Sunday. So, following tradition, the inauguration will be on Monday, Jan. 21.
The adjustment puts Obama in league with President Ronald Reagan, whose second inauguration in 1985 also was changed from Sunday to Monday.
When the Constitution required a March 4 swearing-in, the first president to move his inauguration to Monday was James Monroe on March 5, 1821. After the 20th Amendment changed the inauguration to Jan. 20, Dwight Eisenhower and Reagan held private swearings-in on Sundays that fell on Jan. 20 and then held public ceremonies the following day.

(141,926 posts)held privately on January 20, 1985 and publicly on January 21, 1985, the day before my daughter was born.
As January 20 was a Sunday, the swearing in of Ronald Reagan took place privately in the Grand Foyer of the White House, although it was televised. The following day, January 21, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger administered the oath publicly at the 1985 inauguration. As the weather outside was harsh, with temperatures near zero degrees Fahrenheit, the planners were forced to cancel most of the outdoor events, and the inaugural address was delivered in the Capitol Rotunda.

From the Department of Awesomesauce:
President Obamas inauguration will be held on the Martin Luther King holiday, January 21st. Think about it, the first African American president will be sworn in for his second term on the Martin Luther King holiday observance:
Snip>
The sound youll hear will be many a GOP head exploding. A blah president who got re-elected by an enthusiastic electorate by a wide margin; a blah president who will serve a second term; a blah president who is making history again; a blah president will be inaugurated on a day that celebrates another remarkable blah man.

(2,679 posts)I'm excited for him. He marches with the Boston Crusaders and they might march in the parade. I hope they do. President Inauguration for a cool President, on a very symbolic day, man I hope he gets a change to go.

(68,200 posts)It was a very strange Inauguration. Of course, since it was Reagan, I wasn't into it one bit. I was disgusted, so if it discomfited the Republicans, all the better!

(62,444 posts)Their birthers, who smelled a rat when Roberts flubbed the oath in 2009, believe that the "private swearing in" is done to avoid public exposure of the president's avoidance of the oath, so he doesn't get busted for perjury or something. You see, if he doesn't take the oath, then when his ineligibility is finally proven, he can claim that he never really was president.
Or something like that. The birthers have crawled so far into their weirdness that they are starting to sound like infant twins who develop their own language which only they can understand.
But from my limited understanding of birtherese, the entire January 21 thing is further damning proof of something or other. Assuredly, he will be holding a Koran.
