So the most concerning part of this story is not the worm necessarily. The far more concerning piece of this story is "ate part of my brain". While it might not need saying, to be clear, every single inch of your brain has a function and if you lose that part, no matter how small, the implications could be significant. Everything from psychological stability to memory to motor function regulation to bodily functions that no one even thinks about on a daily basis.
Losing a part of your brain, no matter how small, always matters and is a very big deal.

(19,346 posts)There is, of course, another angle to this to consider. Absent publicizing his medical records, we are left relying upon a decidedly unreliable source for this information: RFK Jr himself. And I'm not even going so far as to say he is making anything up. I just don't trust him to accurately receive, synthesize, understand, express information that a medical professional has provided him. We've got evidence that he does that very badly indeed all over the damn place, and none that he does it well.

(10,988 posts)From Univ of Virginia School of Medicine
July 2020 More than 30 million Americans are infected with a brain parasite spread by cats and contaminated meat, but most will never show symptoms. A new discovery from the University of Virginia School of Medicine explains why, and that finding could have important implications for brain infections, neurodegenerative diseases and autoimmune disorders.
The UVA researchers found that the parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is kept in check by brain defenders called microglia. These microglia release a unique immune molecule, IL-1a, that recruits immune cells from the blood to control the parasite in the brain, the scientists discovered. This process works so well that very few people develop symptomatic toxoplasmosis, the disease the parasite causes.

Really.
By J. P. Dubey, MVSc, PhD, Animal Parasitic Diseases Laboratory, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, USDA
Reviewed/Revised Jun 2018
Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite that infects humans and other warmblooded animals. It is found worldwide.
Felines (members of the cat family) are the only definitive hosts of the parasite. (A definitive host is an animal that a parasite requires in order to mature normally.) Both wild and domestic cats serve as the main reservoir of infection. In dogs, a generalized infection may occur as the parasites travel through the body and invade the tissues.
Adult animals with vigorous immune systems control the spread of the parasite efficiently; therefore, toxoplasmosis usually causes no signs in healthy dogs. However, in puppies, the parasites may spread throughout the body. Signs of infection include fever, diarrhea, cough, difficulty breathing, jaundice, seizures, and death. Adult animals with weakened immune systems are extremely susceptible to developing sudden, generalized toxoplasmosis.

So much for hating on cats unnecessarily.

(8,869 posts)could be infected. (I really think this parasite is a huge problem in our nation/body politic) It would explain a LOT about our society and even the world. Do some reading on well sourced info on this topic and it will shiver yer timbers.

(12,271 posts)"worms ate my brain" is an incredibly rare event, even in less developed countries.
I admit I have way more questions than answers.
1. What was the specific parasite?
2. Where was it found?
3. What specific parts of the brain were damaged?
4. Has there been a full battery of tests done to establish what was damaged and how much?
5. When will those findings be made public?

(7,795 posts)Who knows what the doctor actually said. Who knows if that doctor is a bit of a nut, or just throwing out ideas that Mr chock full o' nuts immediately took as gospel. If the mercury poisoning diagnosis was suggested by the very same doc who diagnosed him with a brain parasite, I'd be *incredibly* skeptical instead of just really, really skeptical. Because, honestly, here are a *lot* of variations of this story that don't involve this nut actually having both brain worms and mercury poisoning. Up to and including him just making it all up.
Both of those are real things. Both are very rare in the developed world. And both together in a nut who believes vaccines are a conspiracy? I'm going to need some very, very detailed receipts.
Are we to believe someone who gets vaccines so incorrect would be a reliable source?
Are we to believe that he sees credible Doctors or just the ones that agree with his crazy stuff?
Are we to believe that he is any better at interpreting this possibility than any other medical information that he routinely gets wrong?
There are a whole lot of questions about where and how he came to this conclusion.

(10,988 posts) Yes, its possible to have a worm living in your brain in fact, its far more common than you might think, said Dr. David Hamer, a professor of global health and medicine at the Boston University School of Public Health, who also directs a travel clinic at Boston Medical Center.
Brain worms became a topic of public fascination Wednesday after the The New York Times reported that presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was mistakenly diagnosed with a brain tumor after scans picked up abnormalities that turned out to be caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died, he reportedly said in a 2012 deposition reviewed by The New York Times.
RFK Jr. says doctors found a dead worm in his brain
Though the article did not name the parasite involved, two doctors told the Globe the most likely culprit is T. solium, a pork tapeworm that is by the far the most common brain worm.
Over the course of his 30 year career, Hamer said he has treated about 20 patients suffering from a condition called cysticercosis, a parasitic disease caused by T. solium, which accounts for the vast majority of brain worms requiring medical attention.
