Understanding the "double haters" who dislike Trump and Biden

"SNIP............
President Biden and former President Trump are in hot pursuit of a big and possibly determinative group of voters who loathe both men.
Why it matters: This bloc of "double haters" has ballooned in size thanks to the surge in Biden's unpopularity since 2020, with polls suggesting they now represent 16% to 20% of the electorate.
* That makes 2024 more similar to 2016 when exit polls showed 18% of voters disliked both Trump and Hillary Clinton than 2020, when Biden and Trump's dual unfavorables amounted to just 3% of the vote.
* The behavior of double haters whether they stay home, vote third-party or bite the bullet in favor of Biden or Trump could be the X-factor in swing states where a few thousand votes could decide the winner.
The big picture: In this year's historically unpopular rematch, the double haters represent an extraordinarily broad range of views. None is a monolith, but several powerful identity groups stand out above the rest.
1. Old-guard Republicans: The GOP establishment may be a shell of its former self, but the ranks of the excommunicated have grown considerably since the early days of the "Never Trump" movement.

who has growing the middle class top of mind rather than annihalating it/who wants democracy. Biden.

(2,010 posts)Most of them didn't like or trust either candidate, some felt their vote didn't matter or their interests weren't represented by either candidate. Very few hated the candidates, but I think they hated the process and the choices.
I have a republican friend who will not vote for tfg again, but he's not planning to vote for Biden, and isn't sure he'll bother to vote. He doesn't like either candidate, feels both parties could and should offer "better" candidates, younger ones. I'm happy to hear he won't vote for tfg!

(2,010 posts)He was a republican, and my mom was a Democrat. They both voted in every election. I remember how we'd have an early supper, then all walk to the polling place so they could vote.
I also remember them each getting a visit from a neighbor who would talk about the upcoming election, encourage voting, and advocate for certain candidates. I was 11 in 1972, in 6th grade for smart kids, following the current events and the Nixon McGovern presidential election, and studying politics and history. I figured out my parents belonged to different political parties, and I asked them questions about their opinions on different candidates from both parties.
Since I was old enough to vote I've been a democratic voter.

(306 posts)I nearly fall into this area
I live in a very red state, and tend to vote more local.races than national (as I feel like my vote won't matter in those) unless I feel strongly about the candidate l, which hasn't happened in a while
Our state gets called for the R at 8 promptly, and I feel like we are not getting better options that are available because of the ptb. Sort of frustrated about it tbh

(3,016 posts)They can't stand Biden because they are consumers and believers of Fox propaganda and they don't like Trump because a lot of truth about him has broken through in spite of Fox's cheerleading.

(76,693 posts)...is that there was only 3% of voters who disliked both candidates. That seems awfully low.
It appears to be based on the actual vote totals where around 2.8% voted for other.
The article doesn't specify where that 3% comes from & if it is the vote numbers, I think it impossible to compare polling numbers in April/May to actual votes.
We can't know, at this point, how many of these "double haters" will still fill in the oval for one of the 2 big choices in November.
I also think the author is overstating the RFK, Jr effect. The closer the election gets, and scrutiny of him increases, his attractiveness may drop dramatically. He may be a darling of some voters now, but I'm not convinced he will be a "darling" 6 months from now.

(5,370 posts)Sort of a nihilist thinking when it comes to politics. "They're all crooks." Thinks he's going to go fishing while the world burns. I told him that if the world burns, it'll also burn his house and everything flammable around his favorite fishing hole.
