An Illinois man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after he allegedly shot his neighbor several times in what authorities say is a racially motivated incident.

Around 5:37 p.m. Tuesday deputies were called to an area in Lockport Township for reports of shots fired. The responding deputies were told that the victim, a 45-year-old woman, had been shot by her neighbor, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook.

Witnesses identified the shooter as John P. Shadbar and said he had "shot the victim outside and was walking around his property with a rifle," according to authorities. They said he allegedly fired dozens of rounds at the woman "from different outside locations."

The shooting was captured on video from security cameras in the area. The sheriff's office said they believe it was racially motivated.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP, Ill. (WLS) -- The wife of a man accused in a hate crime shooting in the south suburbs is now under investigation too.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said she is a correctional sergeant at the Cook County Jail. She has been de-deputized while authorities look into the case.

Investigators say she was home when her husband John Shadbar of Lockport Township allegedly shot his neighbor Melissa Robertson on Tuesday evening.

Furthermore, the family said for years, Shadbar has sat on his lawn and would fire off what he said were blanks from a rifle, terrorizing the neighborhood. Multiple calls were made to police and despite those red flags, the family said nothing was done.

"Nothing was ever done, and I don't care if he was shooting blanks. If he's in his front yard waving a gun and doesn't have a FOID card, I mean, I have a FOID card. I can't go stand in my front yard and wave my gun around without some consequences," said Jeanne Beyer, Robertson's aunt. "Why did he have no consequences?"

Following a search of Shadbar's home, police recovered several firearms, including two rifles and a shotgun, as well as hundreds of rounds of ammunition. His wife, who is a sergeant with the Cook County Sheriff's Department of Corrections, told authorities she was unaware that he had the guns.

In a statement, a Cook County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said "An individual named Wendy Shabar [sic] is employed as a Correctional Sergeant at the Cook County Jail. Per protocol, an internal investigation was opened on Wednesday, and Shadbar has been de-deputized pending the outcome of that investigation."
