Great find.

(6,605 posts)of their front paws compared to our hands, you can see a definite "opposable thumb" there, attached at the wrist like ours, although shorter. It's even creepier to see how a cat's front paw bones compare to a chimp's.
Now, if cats ever discover that they have opposable thumbs, we're all in deep shit.

(118,209 posts)out problems. I remember once being asked by a friend to feed her cats since she had been asked to work late. As I came close to the kitchen, I heard a thunk, and then some odd sounds. I stepped into the kitchen to see one of her cats up on the counter, very self-satisfied look on her face, having just knocked the cat food can down to the floor. One of her other cats had pushed the can into a corner, and had gotten the pull tab up, but had not yet been able to pop it back. Had I been a minute or two later, he might have succeeded!

(2,332 posts)I've had cats that could open doors with those very handles. I had several who figured out the thumb-down door opener, and I even had one who figured out round door knobs, by grabbing on with two paws hard enough to turn it and open the door.
All without an opposable thumb in sight.
I think the only reason that they haven't taken over the world is that it's too much work. I mean, why go to all that trouble, when they can do whatever they want and still get all they need by purring and being beautiful?

(2,332 posts)Dogs are GQP: Slavishly obedient pack followers always needing attention.
Cats are independent and do their own thing with little need for attention. They don't mind it, of course...but it has to be on their terms, no one else's.

(1,096 posts)Actually we got her at the shelter because she appeared to very, very, shy and the attendant told us she was the one most unlikely to be adopted and informed us we could bring her back if it didn't work out.
Who could pass up that intro?
She's been with us for years. It took months before we could touch her and more months before trusted us enough for lap sitting. If anyone visits or just rings the doorbell she's off to one of her hiding places.
