Motherfucker in his morning press gaggle touted the rag's recent polls showing him ahead of President Biden in several states. I no longer trust my former hometown paper since its conversion to being a megaphone for said motherfucker.

(9,535 posts)They believe they are entitled to a position of respect given the storied history of the paper. The plain truth is that they have embraced a "both sides" narrative and betrayed their mission.

Thompson worked for the New York Herald Tribune which no longer exists.
The New Yorker and Vanity Fair are two more publications who never published a "favorable" article about Hitler.

(96,882 posts)As much as you may not like the Times, they don't do polling, rigged or otherwise. They commission polling from a reputable institution (in this case Siena College), which isn't in the business of rigging polls to help Republicans.
nb: this poll was co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Another right wing rag?
Except that polling in the last couple of years has consistently overestimated republicans and underestimated democrats, as demonstrated by special elections nationwide.
Think. Again.

(32,323 posts)I can guarantee they need to keep the polls close so that TSF can claim the election was rigged.

(15,909 posts)And "they" are fudging the numbers across multiple polling organizations, without any employees, or students in the case of college-sponsored polls, catching on and spilling the beans?
This is up there with the same kind of conspiratorial thinking Republicans use to claim "Trump won" in 2020 for the implausibility of pulling it off.

(2,369 posts)Im actually pretty tired of the OMG, you cant trust ______ any more cries. We know whats a tabloid infotainment/propaganda source (Faux, OAN, etc.) and whats a news source that runs honestly. Newsflash: those respectable news sources are run by humans with different opinions, life experiences, and politics, and that is going to color choices in covering the news and what gets more attention. Big whoop. The answer is not to trust a specific source, but to sip from many. Some days a story on NYT will knock it out of the park. Sometimes BBC. Sometimes CNN. Sometimes Agence France. Sometimes Reuters. Some days theyll all get it right, and others theyll all get it wrong.
So what? We have never been able to trust a single news source in the entire history of humanity. So yes, I trust NYT as much as I trust any other often-reliable real news org, and I will be following up stories I see there with others from other decent sources. Somewhere in the mess the main thread of what happened comes into focus. Thats literally all you can expect.

(130,537 posts)It does have an infuriating tendency toward milquetoast bothsidering but I wouldn't call it right-wing. I would call it timid and often unwilling to stick its neck out. It does, however, have some excellent reporters and opinion writers, e.g., Jamelle Bouie, Michelle Goldberg, Paul Krugman and Charles Blow, plus a few that aren't so good, like Ross Douhat and the always-annoying Maureen Dowd. As with other media sources, I'll evaluate for myself which wing it is trying to fly with.
