Detroit grows in population for the first time in decades

Michigan’s largest has gained population for the first time in more than six decades, according to new population estimates released on Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Detroit gained 1,852 residents between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023. It marks the first time since 1957 that the Motor City has not lost population, according to the federal agency.

In 1957, Dwight Eisenhower was president, G. Mennen “Soapy” Williams was the governor of Michigan and the Detroit Lions were National Football League champions.

Last year’s official, adjusted Census population for Detroit was 631,218. Its population now stands at 633,366.

compared to my trip there in 2008. Downtown was more popping and some of the other neighborhoods seemed to have more business and didn’t look as dilapidated.

Lots of fresh water up there...

Also, it has a vibrant arts and urban farming scene, and many charming old buildings still exist.

I enjoy the HGTV series "Bargain Block," which is about partners (life and business) who buy cheap, falling-down houses in Detroit and turn them into cool, unique, but still affordable residences.

Why did they all leave? Auto industry issues?

During WWII they built tanks, airplanes & military equipment and of course automobiles. The loss of a need of workers and then people started leaving in mass. There was just no economic opportunity for kids graduating high school. A lot of people moved to Texas to get work.
