Former President Trump and his allies including the Speaker of the House and members of Congress are already laying their foundation to claim the 2024 election was stolen. Their claim would be laughable, ignorable even, if Donald Trump had not previously used the same lie to incite a violent attack by an armed mob on the U.S. Capitol only three years ago.
Unfortunately, this history is repeating itself in real time.
We are watching the same cast of characters performing from the same script. In 2020, MAGA extremists made false claims that the election was fraudulent and stolen, a carefully crafted narrative that many of our House Majority colleagues participated in. Speaker Mike Johnson even tried to disenfranchise millions of Americans by leading an amicus brief to overturn the free, fair and secure 2020 election.
Now, the former president and his allies in the House are doubling down on their efforts to undermine the sanctity of our elections, with the false claim that millions of noncitizens are voting in our federal elections.

(54,919 posts)someone shows up to vote. They give their name and address to the poll worker. The poll worker goes to the computer and finds no record of that person, even in another district or municipality.
That person cannot vote ON THE VOTING MACHINE, but . . . . that person can be given a PROVISIONAL BALLOT, which is filled out. All information is UNDER OATH and the any false information is subject to prosecution. That ballot is sealed in a bag where it is taken to the county Board of Elections. And that ballot (and other provisional ballots) are individually examined and determined whether that vote will be counted. (The voter would have had to have been previously vetted by the Board of Elections with proof of citizenship, residence, etc.) Many of the ballots are discarded and not counted. So, yeah, technically and theoretically, an undocumented voter can TRY TO VOTE, but that vote won't be counted.
And an undocumented voter could not vote by mail as previously stated, that person would have had to have been registered with the Board of Elections and that ballot sent to him/her by mail.
Think. Again.

(179,949 posts)When the Texas voter id law first came into effect and before that law was largely gutted by a court ruling, the GOP used to have a major advantage in vote by mail. In my county in 2010, there were over 10 times the number of GOP vote by mail ballots casted compared to Democratic vote by mail ballots. The State Democratic Party put an emphasis on vote by mail in part because such votes were not subject to voter id law and to be more competitive. Due to TFG and other reasons, Democrats had slightly more vote by mail ballots casted in my county in the 2012 election.
By some measures, Donald Trump has flip-flopped more on absentee and mail-in voting than on any other issue.

As a factual matter, Trumps comments werent altogether true, but he nevertheless made clear that he remains opposed to people casting absentee ballots through the mail. This was, however, a reversal of sorts: Just two days earlier, the presumptive Republican nominee released a video online in which he specifically touted absentee voting and early voting.
This, however, was the opposite of what he told Newsmaxs Greg Kelly two weeks earlier, when Trump called for eliminating early voting altogether. You know, in the old days, it was Election Day, the GOP candidate said. Now its ... 48 days; 48 days of cheating. He went on to endorse one-day voting......
A month later, the former president told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference that it was time for Republicans to change our thinking on early and mail-in voting. In July 2023, Trump even filmed a video for the Republican National Committee in support of the partys early voting initiative.
And then he switched back to his other position.
Mail-in voting is totally corrupt. Get that through your head, Trump declared a few months ago, stepping all over his partys message. It has to be. The votes. I mean, it has to be.
Is it any wonder why the Republican base has absolutely no idea what to think?
All things considered, Trump appears to have flip-flopped more on absentee and mail-in voting than on any other issue. What will his position be on this tomorrow? I wont hazard a guess, though if recent history is any guide, itll be the opposite of what he says soon after.
This will be fun to watch.
