MADISON Shortly after his 40th birthday, U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde traveled to the Amazon rainforest where he ate an armadillo, swam in a stream with piranhas, contracted two parasites and, unexpectedly, found relief from the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
The 60-year-old Republican businessman shared the story Tuesday during an hour-long radio interview with conservative talk radio host Dan O'Donnell on WISN-AM.
Hovde said he'd experienced pain in his joints and lymph nodes for about six months after returning from the trip. A visit to the doctor determined he had contracted E. histolytica and giardia.
"But the weird thing is during that six months, my MS almost totally went away," Hovde said. "So, ironically, I finally take different medications to get rid of the parasites. My MS just went very much in a very benign form."

(105,866 posts)and his Entamoeba histolytica infection is unlikely related. Still, good for him on the remission(and the metronidazole he likely got to treat both amoebic parasites.

(69,459 posts)I know, because that's how the doctors describe me.
I got diagnosed with MS in 1995. No progression after the first several months.
I was on interferon therapy for 18-20 years, and the drug company & my neuro agreed there is no way the medicine did that.
As the injections were beating me up (bruises & dermal inflammation, I quit doing the injections. No meds for over 10 years now & still no increase in symptoms.
Lots of MS sufferers have remission but then experience exacerbations, periodically. That doesn't happen with people in deep remission.
They think a body chemistry change (perhaps caused by long term therapy) is the reason. But, there is an insufficient number of cases to know for sure.

(4,927 posts)Autoimmune disorders are speculated to be caused at least in part by a "bored" immune system, with no pathogens to regularly battle it turns on itself. In parts of the world where parasitic infections are endemic, autoimmune issues are much rarer than in the sterile and sanitary First World.
That said I can find zero evidence for these parasites being beneficial, it's worms that you need
