I have flown older version of the flag over the last 30 years. I also fly historic flags of family who have fought in past wars. Ive been sent videos of anti democrats denouncing the flag or that they want America to be less flag waving patriotic.
How did Democrats somehow get linked to anti America sentiment? Why do republics claim historic flags and somehow the history of that flag is lost and it becomes pro-right to use it. Im a patriotic democrat and proudly stand behind our flag.

(7,606 posts)I feel like I am very patriotic but I don't fly the flag. I just don't feel the need to do so, it would feel a bit performative to me. I also think using the flag in the opposite way such as burning it or flying it upside down would be performative for me. I think that people can use the flag however they wish as to them it represents America, good and bad. It can be seen as representing America and there are certainly good and bad things our country has done so using it as a symbol for both seem ok. I just would use it for neither. Its a flag, flying it just as burning it don't make you patriotic or not. Supporting the good our country does while fighting against the bad it does makes you patriotic and if someone wants to use the flag to do that then that is fine, it's just not something I need. I have ancestors that have fought in most of the wars of our nation. Most of my family were in the military, Vietnam, Korea, WW2, the Civil war, one a General with the Union and another a General with the Confederates ha!, The Revolution, even have one that said "Give me liberty or give me death". The flag doesn't make me patriotic or not no matter how I feel about it. Its been flown to chase and kill native Americans, its been used to fight for freedom. Its just a symbol, one that people use however they want. I'm patriotic because of the people in our nation that fought for good, freedom and equality for all and are still doing it. A battle that we are slowly winning over time to make our country truly great. Fly the flag, burn the flag, I don't care as long as you are still fighting that battle for everyone.

(1,983 posts)A few weeks later an acquaintance told me he didn't know I was a republican. As if the American flag was owned by the Republican party and only Republicans could display it.
Many people don't know much about the American flag. I see violations of the flag code every day, usually by "patriotic" right wingers. Most probably do not even know there is a flag code.

(22,780 posts)but the American flag gets flow right in front of the business and stays there until it is nothing more than a rag and then gets so many complaints they are shamed into changing it only this last time the flag was just removed and never replaced and it's been 3 months now.

(655 posts)I see far more anti-US and anti-west hatred from certain segments of the right. This group seems much larger now than it did in the past.
As for the claims of Democrats being unpatriotic, I think a lot of it is baseless partisan nonsense. No doubt there is a large group of leftists who seemingly hate the US and the west, but how many of them considered themselves Democrats? They seem to hate us just as much, if no more, than they hate the Republicans. Also, in the past when things were less weird, I think republicans saw our justified criticism of our country and hatred, rather than viewing it as us trying to make our country better and live up to it's values.

(10,213 posts)...to mask non-patriotic and anti-American sentiment is mostly (only?) a rightwing ploy, so yes, you can expect people to assume you're republican if your reasons for proudly flying the flag are mistaken for rightwing cowardly deception.

(7,326 posts)People worship a piece of fabric and dont care about the values it supposedly stands for. I think its jingoistic, too. Non-immigrants are effectively patting themselves on the back for something that was random chance being born on US soil. If I had a flag it would be that one with the photo of the planet as seen from space. Human-created divisions are doing us no favors. All life forms are interconnected, and the sooner we stop emphasizing our differences, the better.
Just my opinion/feeling. Obviously you are free to fly a flag if you like.

(76 posts)Men and woman have died for it and that means something to me. Ive traveled the world many times over and I dont that other countries in its entirety have it better. I also am horrified that displaying our flag could ever be attributed to a political party. Ive never had anyone comment on my flags and host democrats frequently at my home.
