Gun owners in South Carolina marked a significant moment on Tuesday as Governor Henry McMaster showcased a new law allowing any legal adult to openly carry a gun without a permit.
The bill reached McMaster's desk just 12 days prior, and he wasted no time in signing it upon arrival. The permit for open carry was swiftly approved, raising concerns about the potential consequences of this decision.

(18,468 posts)This stupid law will not end well for Churches and Businesses who have signs that say NO GUNS PERMITTED on their physical sites. For that is the right of any privately own business as well as a place of worship.
This law says that Dylan Roof types have the right to open carry and perhaps kill people in a church.
Crazy. This has nothing to do with a "regulated militia" or even the 2nd amendment.

I see very little information in this Curious Historian piece, including a dateline.
Here's an article from the AP:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Any adult who can legally own a gun can now carry one openly in South Carolina after Gov. Henry McMaster signed a bill into law Thursday, just a day after it received final legislative approval.
Gun rights supporters have pushed for the law for nearly a decade, first allowing open carry for people who took the training to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Encouraging that kind of training was one of the biggest roadblocks for the new law. A Senate proposal to provide millions of dollars for free gun training across the state needed to get a concealed weapons permit was part of what cleared the way.
The law also provides stiffer penalties for people who repeatedly carry guns in places where they would still be banned, like schools or courthouses, or commit crimes while armed, whether they use the weapon or not. The penalties can be enhanced if the offender doesnt have a concealed weapons permit.

On edit:
Here's the full article at the Curious Historian

It contains much more information than the MSN version. It even has a dateline - May 21, 2023. It doesn't give a bill number or the date it was signed (it just says, the governor "showcased" it on "Tuesday", after having signed it 12 days earler. ). I suspect it's the bill that was signed on March 7, 2024 (which happened to fall on Thursday.) It's not a very good article.
Another update:
A different AP article that uses very similar language to the Curious Historian piece (but from 2 mos. ago):

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina Gov, Henry McMaster held a ceremony Tuesday to spotlight a new law allowing any adult who can legally own a gun to carry the weapon openly without a permit.
McMaster signed the bill into law 12 days ago as soon as it hit his desk, allowing open carry before the ink had dried. Tuesdays Statehouse event outside his office was a day to let everyone who pushed for the law to take a victory lap.

(20,414 posts)We could create several Hollywood franchises based on that question.
What will most likely happen? South Carolina will join the other 30 states that allow open carry without a permit and this is the last we will hear of it.
