(2,317 posts)Is fundamentally inconsistent with what Democrats should support, namely freedom of speech. Holding a hearing because Alito displayed flags that supported Trump or the insurrection smacks of McCarthyism to me. Democrats would rightly lose their minds if Congress held a hearing about a flag one of the liberal justices displayed at her private residence.
And even if a hearing wasnt completely inappropriate, whats the point? Theres zero chance Alito is impeached so this would just be wasting money and time that could be spent elsewhere.

(32,231 posts)I thinking, we dont need to do everything in our power to make sure the rest of the country realizes Supreme Court justices are part of the stop the steal movement, we arent in a severe, urgent, emergency situation where we are going to lose our democracy, we dont need to make a lot of noise to make sure everybody knows whats going on.
Either Democratic politicians start making tremendous noise at every opportunity and show fight to that half of the country that sees no reason to bother to vote or we are going to lose it all guaranteed.
We are months away from what the GOP has said well be a united Reich or a new Nazi party. If we dont see that now, then Jesus fucking Christ.

(2,317 posts)Because we dont like Trump or his supporters. No thanks. If you want to hold Congressional hearings because a Supreme Court justice flew a flag you dislike youll find no support from me. Thats exactly the sort of thing Trump would do. Its pointless and unbecoming of Democrats. Its the sort of abuse of power we should condemn, not condone.

(1,739 posts)This is how we let Republicans turn an almost nothing, or an actual nothing, into something big, while our surrogates turn something that is actually big into a nothing...because of messaging (or a lack thereof)...which is why we often lose the argument even when the facts are on our side.
Dick Durban's saying there is no point to holding hearings about Alito because he says there is nothing to be gained from that. There IS something to be gained from that!
If we did what the GOP does so often to make a nothing burger an actual issue in the minds of too many voters (and OUR issue in this case is legitimately a BIG issue), that would not only put pressure on the Court, but would also serve at least to some extent to inform low information voters about this, in lieu of their picking it up on their own, which many of them will not do. And THAT would add more pressure. We not only should push hearings, but Democratic surrogates should also be flooding the airwaves slamming Alito and the Court with the same zeal and alacrity as the GOP always does with their PHONY issues!
And don't forget: all of this will help our election prospects by clearly making our correct argument to the voters, but appeasement will most definitely NOT!
And it has NOTHING to do with McCarthyism! It has EVERYTHING to do with a guy who is a Supreme Court justice who is openly supporting the coup! My God! What more do you need?
How about we learn from the GOP? The approach shown in the post I am replying to is why we lose too often even when we are right! Some of you will blast me. I don't care. I'm tired of our passive efforts allowing scummy right-wing extremists to make progress that we could easily defeat if we fought hard!

(6,849 posts)They are not supposed to have an obvious political bias, nor should they be flying flags that openly support said bias while they are ruling on related cases.

(6,849 posts)This fascist needs to be hauled in front of the judiciary committee NOW. If Durbin doesnt have the balls, then he needs to step down and let someone who does take over.
