(58,702 posts)... Rights guaranteed in the the Constitution I swore to uphold just before I signed a waver to my access to the Bill of Rights and subjected myself to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Your complete ease to exercise your rights only convinces me I made the right decision.
I believe in free speech. I believe in following your conscience. I have no argument (only personal qualms) with flying the Flag upside down, or burning it (though that will make me grit my teeth and ball my fists). It's your right and I would not have it any other way.
Forced shows of respect for the Flag only turns it into a rag and a litmus test.
What truly offends me are all those patriots who fly ragged flags from cars, car dealerships that fly a weather torn giant flag overnight or in the rain without lighting on them or repairing broken flag staffs no longer capable of hoisting or lowering a flag, those really frost my cakes. Watching TFG dry humping the Flag he'd never defended because we suckers and loser stepped up while he wouldn't really fried my cakes.
It stirs my blood when a color guard carries the Flag. I am sorry you don't know that feeling. For me it is the product and legacy from my family that were recognized heroes of the Revolution, A Medal of Honor winner from the civil war (for the Great Locomotive Chase where he was killed) and every war since. We are Navy, Marines, Army and my son in law is an Air Force Academy graduate.

(58,702 posts)... as a machinist mate I learned the BTs would use hot water out of the ships boilers, which had Hagavap (for cutting mineral build up in the condensers) in it and would clean a guys gut out the same way. They'd have an immunity to it and they thought it was funny sending us new snipes to the head in a hurry.
That film was from WWII. I matriculated Camp Moffet, company 76. RTC Great Lakes. 'Feb 72. Went to MM "A" schools at Great Lakes, too.

I was on a tin can, made a lot of coffee. The gunners mates had their own pot, back in their control room; I was on that ship for 600 and some days, and never saw that pot cleaned. Now THAT was a cup of coffee!

(7,320 posts)I don't do the pledge sitting or standing myself and on those rare occasions when I'm some where the anthem is played, I use that moment to hit the concession stand or go to the restroom. It's all garbage as far as I'm concerned and has nothing to do with "loving your country" on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veteran's Day, Christmas, Easter, etc. In fact I equate much of the "patriotism" I see on these holidays with the faux
kindness many people dust off for the Christmas season only to re-shelve it on Dec 26th and resume being the normal a-hole they really are.
You do you, I'll do me.

Quite frankly, I find your thread offensive, another right I have because of the men and women who died to protect it.
Have a great weekend remembering those who chose to defend and give up their lives protecting our Constitution.

(58,702 posts)... I was shocked. I've heard it a LOT since. I pledge nothing to Texas. I came here for Austin and a great job. I used to say to people who asked me, "Why Texas?" and I'd say "Austin is in Texas, but it's not Texas." And that has changed; now we're old, too old to start out over again and with a MiL who's 94 and as MAGA as they come except for vaxxing.
Marble Falls used to be Austin's country cousin. Now it is MAGAd out. Not happy, but am resigned. And I still don't stand for the Lone Star rag.

Yes, I stood, because I'm their parent.
I was at the Texas lege in Jan 2023. I can't remember if they had it then. (It was opening day, not for governor, but for state reps and senators) I was sitting in a senator's office during the actually swearing-in ceremony because there were not enough seats. If I would have been at the ceremony, I would have stood etc. I personally think the Texas pledge is just another form jingoism. However, at the capitol, I'm am represented by two Democrats and I support my representatives who work to resist the nuts who are running this place.

I bet the GOP and RW orgs do the Texas pledge.
Public schools are required by Texas law to recite the Texas pledge. I guess the pledge has not been forced on Texas cities, or if it is, not everyone is biting.

Oddly, my former Boston granddaughter has taken a job in Austin and she just loves it. At first, I was fearful for her because of the strict ban on abortion but I know that she is fortunate enough to have a family to get her back to Boston if she ever needs abortion care. She tells me she can't find a gynecologist because the good ones have fled the state.

I got here in the nineties about when they should have closed the gates cut off anymore of us. It was fun while it lasted, the thing that did it for me was when they realigned Lloyd Doggett's district, cutting Austin into three districts, the two new ones went GOP and the GOP felt that Doggett would fall in the next election or two. He's still standing, but by 2005 or so rents went through the roof.

I read a book not too long ago that said the most popular patriotic tune for several decades was actually Yankee Doodle. That would have been an interesting Anthem - LOL.

(58,702 posts)God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen
...not so much at all! And a lot shorter.
O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen
Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over
From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

(7,595 posts)Dont worry about the naysayers. The Anthem is like the flag to me, symbols that don't really represent if you are a patriot or not and were misused as much as not. It may to others and I dont have a problem with that just like they should not have a problem with us. I have a feeling that ol' Ben Franklin would be sitting right there with you and I.
Keep on keeponing.

(16,822 posts)I am not a vet but I do understand we are bound by our Constitution, not a flag or an anthem. I take our rights seriously as some gave their everything so I can have the life I have. This is a most interesting thread as opinions are passionate and I respect the honesty from those who served and those who did not.

(21 posts)Non-comissioned officer, NCO Academy and Senior NCO Academy graduate. I served under 7 presidents from LBJ to Clinton. I was never ashamed of any of them but I am ashamed of Trump. Every oath of enlistment I took was to the Constitution not to a person. I don't care if someone sits during the National Anthem. I think the pledge of allegiance to the flag means actually nothing. I hate false patriots and idiots that put on BDU's and walk around like they actually wore them in the service. My retired ID says Air Force but the majority of my time was full time Air National Guard. When I retired I received the Air Force Meritorious Medal.
