I think I've heard he's an asshole to other actors, directors, etc many years ago so not surprising.

(113,947 posts)Dreyfuss is 76. Steven Spielberg is 77. Alan Alda is 88. Michael Douglas is 79. George Lucas is 80. Goldie Hawn is 73 and Kurt Russell is 78. Are any of those other than Dreyfuss asshole bigoted "products of their generation" who refuse to "learn, grow, or change?" Really?
(The list are just a few that come to mind as long-term Hollywood liberals of that generation).

Google just as I state and prove to yourself. If it is wrong, complain to google. I posted what came up.
I'm sorry to hear you are having a bad morning and need to lash out at me for reasons that are totally unclear. The point was made regardless.

As for this:
1. I am actually having a great day.
2. It is not morning here, it is 6 PM.
3. I was not 'lashing out' out at you in any way. That is pure hyperbole. All I did was list the correct birthyears and Gens. Zero ill intent and certainly no lashing out.

(113,947 posts)You continue to insinuate that I am trying to claim otherwise--so prove it to yourself. I am glad you are having a good day and hopefully will not respond to others' posts in such an accusatory manner. Again, with the "hyperbole" accusation, belying any claim of a sincere apology, as I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. Such a small matter, yet, you felt compelled to respond as you did. Put me on ignore if I bother you so much. It is uncalled for.

(2,332 posts)In a long time, but he's been making films as recently released as 2023 (Sweetwater). He's made about 18 film films since 2009. Most actors would be quite happy with that kind of 'dead' career.
I don't remember the details, but someone accused him of sexual harassment when the MeToo movement was at its peak. Since it flew under the radar, I doubt anyone took it seriously; however, the accusation and public kerfuffle alone has embittered many an accused person, and sometimes enough to reveal the wanker that was always there, down deep.

(22,456 posts)....where 'social shunning' is the only way to move forward safely. When planning to associate professionally with someone, it's wise to first check their background for rightwing connections, if you don't want to be dragged through the mud (of their own making) with them.
Sure, we must be open to anyone's attempt at self-correction and remorse, but until those things are adequately proven, these rightwingers need to be treated as the pariahs that they choose to be.

(77,795 posts)I never saw Jaws, will never bother. I saw Close Encounters and it was O.K., moderately provoking, not more. Richard DREYFUSS had his day of the hullabaloo back then, or just halfway in the baloo. He wasnt a big personality, didnt keep my focus. I didnt know of any political involvement, took it for granted he was a run otha mill Hollywood Lib, but unusually mousey, WIMPY. When he finally won an Oscar I was mildly approving, thought it was rude of Shirley MacCLAINE to elbow him out of the spotlight in the middle of his acceptance speech while she took the mic to cheer for her brother Warren BEATTY, an authentic Lib, about who knows what off topic thing.
So have never thought about him, lo, all these decades. Saw him on Bill MAHERs podcast, hour and a half, and main thing was how oddly
he was slouching, sprawling and sliding in the armchair, and how he did rambling word association throughout, although nothing explicitly controversial. Of course, MAHER the Libertarian smoked pot, guzzled booze throughout.
But a year or two ago my local radio talk show wingnuts were in an absolute wingnut tizzy, claiming that the Rolling Stone magazine had dropped its Liberal identity with a wingnut attack of some kind on BIDEN, or somesuch. I got on the case with my usual research (Ive never looked at Rolling Stone), and found the article, which was by somebody surnamed DREYFUSS, who turned out to be Wimpy Richards son. Hes a Nepo-Baby who had the title of Digital Editor at Rolling Stone. The article was in no way a shift of general editorial slant or inclination, just one Nepo-Babys personal opinion, which I took to be an entitled spawn rebelling against his rich Hollywood parent. One more wingnut balloon I have popped with a supercilious email.
*** So now, here is daddy Richard being gigged as sexist, homophobic, and anti-diversity. Well, over the recent years Ive been inured to seeing Big Names having their bigness knocked down to size, especially in YouTube exposes. And actually, SPIELBERG has lost his luster himself. So DREYFUSS never blotted out my sun to start with, and what hes spewing now isnt different from what lots of podcast comedians are griping about, how diversity and wokeness and P.C. are killing comedy and such, and how things were better in the Great good old days (sounds like MAGA) or get-off-my-lawn.
*** As for his defending Laurence OLIVIERs blackface for Othello, whats a great actor supposed to do if a great role is about a Black character, not play the great part?! And a month ago Bille Dee WILLIAMS surfaced, in a WISE, COSMOPOLITAN Old Age, very bright, very expansive, refusing to talk Race, noting his very diverse circle of friends, not criticizing the current trends, but saying his friend OLIVIER was fine as Othello and had taken things to a more extreme level, depicting Othello with other stereotypes, which Billy Dee LOVED. He said the same thing, actually, as DREYFUSS, that an actor of whatever race, gender, whatever should take whatever role, being ACTING. So DREYFUSS' excuse is that he likes the Constitution.

Richard Dreyfuss sparks outrage at Jaws screening as movie theater apologizes for his 'sexist and homophobic' remarks
. Just 12 months ago, Dreyfuss was widely criticized for his remarks on the new diversity and inclusion requirements at the Academy Awards and said 'they make me vomit.' ....
The actor also defended Laurence Olivier's performance in the 1965 film Othello in which he played the lead character in blackface.
.
The actor has long been outspoken about his belief in the constitution.
In 2008, he founded The Dreyfuss Initiative, a nonprofit that promotes teaching about American democracy in classrooms nationwide. The initiative, among other things, provides teachers with videos and educational tools.

(2,332 posts)For Goodbye Girl in 1978, it was early in his career. Until Adrien Brody won in 2003 for the Pianist, Dreyfuss was the youngest recipient. He's still #2 on the list of youngest actors to win Best Actor.
As it is, MacLaine didn't take away from his win that year, because she was nowhere near the stage at the time; Sylvester Stallone presented the award solo, and quickly stepped aside after Dreyfuss had the statue in his hand.
I believe you're confusing his 1978 Oscar appearance with the following year, when MacLaine and Dreyfuss presented the Best Actress Award (winner: Jane Fonda). MacLaine hardly shoved Dreyfuss aside to praise her brother. The entire evening had been full of mindless random banter from presenters, and MacLaine added her share. It's classic MacLaine to do something silly in public because she's always been silly in public. I don't think anyone, including Dreyfuss, found her behaviour surprising or all that upsetting, no more than they found it upsetting when Olympia Dukakis used her acceptance speech in 1988 to cheer on her cousin running for President at the time.

(5,370 posts)On Saturday, The Cabot hosted a screening of the 1975 blockbuster along with a Q&A discussion with Dreyfuss, 76, who starred in the film. However, things took a sharp turn when, according to social media posts from attendees, the Oscar-winning actor began sharing offensive comments about women and trans youth.
According to one attendee, Dreyfuss called Barbra Streisand a genius but said he didnt listen to her because she is a woman and women shouldnt have that power. The same attendee said Dreyfusswho was clad in a housedress and waving a cane, according to Deadlinethen claimed that you shouldnt be listening to some 10-year-old who says they want to be a boy instead of a girl.
He also said that Close Encounters only worked because he was in it.
