Putin will make a play against NATO, knowing tfg won't lift a finger to stop it. Then China will finally see an opening to attack Taiwan. The US military will be effectively leader-less. It will all be non-nuclear. Anyone see this being unrealistic? If so, why.

(289 posts)I'll never forget that day in a November not so long ago when I drove up to the Wendy's drive-up window in Hilo and the young lady asked me what I thought about the newly elected tangerine tweaker and I said "You Have Got To Be Fucking Kidding Me" and cried all the way home. And I still haven't gotten over it. And I struggle with this particular reality. There just seems something so existentially wrong about it that acknowledging it gives it a power it doesn't deserve.

(5,179 posts)But I do believe that I qualified it based on how the American population responds to (how) a Trump second term.
I would have provided a link, but not sure how.
Domestic politics will determine how quickly Trump is able to cower the American population and we will determine our response. If we maintain control of the Senate and take over the House, then we can maintain some pushback to the craziness. But Trump will have the power of the presidency and we now realize that the Supreme Court is corrupt, so thats a problem.
I do believe that Trump is a Russian asset and will turn on NATO and based on Putins desire, it may precipitate a regional war thus could quickly escalate. Trump might choose not to support our allies(NATO) which could then force another impeachment. But, as to how whether the Senate would have enough votes to remove him from office - that is the question. One could assume that the GOP will be pro-Putin as they have demonstrated that they will kiss the ass of anyone. Sadly, I would not put it past Trump and the GOP to make America a satellite of Russia.
But I think/hope that Biden will win, but I also thought that Hillary would win, so who can predict the Voters of this nation and their thirst for pain.

Trump is aligning with the world autocrats, not fighting with them.
Trump will give Putin and Xi what they want. For the right price.
Russia and China have very powerful armies.
NATO, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Philippines cannot wage a large scale war against
China and Russia without US assistance. They have been relying on the US for military help
and do not have the capability to fight alone.
So I don't see your scenario happening soon under Trump.

(9,390 posts)They have bit off more than they can chew in Ukraine forget about taking on even an American less NATO. China is a bigger potential cause for concern, but China does not want a bombed out Taiwan, they want an economic powerhouse. The thought of doing what it will take to capture the island will make its value to China weak at best.

(81,262 posts)To think otherwise is not correct.
1. There is zero chance Ukraine can defeat Russia without considerable help from other countries.
And even then the long term outlook for Ukraine is not good. The only hope Ukraine has is to get
Russia to the bargaining table.
2. Because Russia is a serious military threat, NATO countries are now beefing up their military defense
systems. If Russia was not a powerful threat, they would not have to do this.

(81,262 posts)It is important to understand the Chinese thought process.
They must take Taiwan for a number of reasons.
1. China's goal is to be a 21st century global superpower.
To achieve this goal they must first establish regional control.
This is why they are hell bent on getting control of the South China Sea.
And that includes Taiwan.
2. They cannot tolerate a US proxy like Taiwan so close to their shores.
It is a national security issue.
3. They must save face. They truly believe Taiwan belongs to them, and they
will get it back. Just like they did with Hong Kong.
4. They must demonstrate to the world that they are as powerful as the US.
5. There may be some economic motive to capture a lucrative economy. China has
fallen on hard times with a terrible domestic economy, they could use the revenue, but that is not
on the top of the list right now.
So now we see the motivation. Let's talk about how they will do it.
They have the same plan as Putin had with Ukraine. Three days to one week operation.
Go into the capital, in this case Taipei, knock out all communications, kill or capture all leadership,
capture the airports. Activate the carefully cultivated pro-China rebels in Taiwan, so get a civil
war going. This can happen very quickly before the US gets involved.
China is betting that it will not bungle the operation like Putin did. Which of course infuriated Xi.
I think it is certain that Xi would bomb Taiwan back to the stone ages if he had to do so.
Capturing Taiwan is highly symbolic and he will do it any way he can.
But yes of course he prefers to leave the financial resources intact.
So if he can go in and capture it quickly, he can kill the Taiwan leadership but
leave the infrastructure in place.

(661 posts)... if Trump is reelected. The US becomes much more isolationist, and the expansionist bloc takes advantage of that.
Japan has to rethink their pacifist constitution, but I don't see them going to war to protect Taiwan. And the EU has to ramp up their military posture without the US. They might even interfere with the Russian aggression in Eastern Europe, especially if they go beyond Ukraine.
I could see a world war without the US involved, but I don't think it likely in the next few years. The other once-allied nations are not ready to go on their own, I think. The bad guys would take advantage of that. Which would eventually cause the others to step up.
And America loses all reputation, allies, and eventually much of our trade as we become the world's pariah for betraying our treaties, obligations, agreements, and beliefs.
The rest of the world may survive, but the US's role as a world leader would wither and die.
I think I need to hug a puppy.
