His name will go down in history as a cheat.

(29,969 posts)I would lover $1Trillion to the US treasury,,, but that won't happen... so I propose that the 3 SCOTUS appointments be undone and now given to Biden.
I understand there is no law or constitutional reason... but it would be fair.

(55,825 posts)The legal warfare, stolen documents, damage to national security, treason and insurrection,
rigging an election, cheating on taxes, his rapes and assaults, the list goes on and on.
Trump no doubt stole quite a bit of cash while in office. So did his family.
Then there is the damage his cult followers and politicians cause on a daily basis.
$1 trillion is a just a down payment towards Trump's damages.

(55,825 posts)He has also caused CIA agents and assets to be killed. Soon after he took office, there was a mysterious
uptick in CIA asset deaths and disappearances.
Trump stole so many top secrets, highest level of classified documents.
We have to assume it has all be compromised, which is going to put many lives in danger.
Especially the military and intelligence agencies.
The damage to our national security is incomprehensible and we will never know the full extent of it.

(5,410 posts)In the early days of the pandemic, Trump saw that the overwhelming numbers of Covid deaths were happening in the blue cities in the blue states, and he deliberately dragged his feet on the covid information and response, because he wanted that trend of blue voter deaths to continue, to improve his chances for re-election!
What he did not figure on, was that the pandemic would eventually spread to red and rural areas where his own voters would begin to die in large numbers as well-- and were influenced to do the wrong things by Trump having downplayed or disparaged mask-wearing and other common-sense precautions-- eventually leading to a larger proportion of his own voters dying, than voters in blue cities...
Irish_Dem
(55,825 posts)Of course yes Trump did not realize his cult followers would be killed too as it spread to the rural areas.

It is fun and gives him pleasure.
He is outraged that others do not appreciate his "brilliance."

(2,317 posts)Changed a single vote. We can celebrate the conviction without speculating about the impact of the crimes. Everyone already knew about the grab them by the pussy comment and he still won. These crimes are much less damming in my mind. Think about thatTrump admitted to sexual assault and none of his supporters blinked.

(3,121 posts)But remember, Trump got the Wikileaks dump the afternoon the Access Hollywood tape story broke. That smeared the Dems and likely at least softened any women who were offended and decided to vote for Hilary instead and almost certainly caused some to not vote at all. The coup de grace was James Comey's statement
In Texas, early voting was underway and I was a precinct chair. The turnout was very good until Comey spoke. There was an immediate drop off in turnout for Clinton.
Any doubt that criminal conspiracy was behind the timing of the Wikileaks dump (or which nation colluded with Trump to make it happen)? What about the likelihood that a criminal conspiracy (Giuliani and his former SDNY pals and other allies within the FBI) created the pressure campaign that led Comey to cave and violate protocol to reveal the new investigation?
When multiple causes are behind a phenomena, scientists say it is "over-determined." This is such a case. The dots haven't been connected on all the criminal activity, but now one piece of the conspiracy is on the public record, adjudicated by a jury of Trump's peers.

(1,895 posts)Republicans were going to have a brokered convention to choose another candidate, but they realized that Trump was so wildly popular with the 80% of their base who are authoritarians that they could not win without him. So the Republicans put party before country and chose an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy. They knew what they were doing, several very senior Republicans refused to support Trump which is unheard of.
But for a democracy to be functional there must be at least two viable parties committed to democracy. The US has only one now. Unless and until the corporate Republicans come up with a viable party committed to democracy, democracy will be one election away from failure in the US.
TwilightZone
(27,955 posts)They cannot be considered dead when they still have roughly half of Congress, many state legislatures and governorships, and a pretty firm hold on the judiciary, including SCOTUS.
I'll consider them dead when they're no longer a competitive political force.
Besides, Trump isn't the cause. He's a symptom. This is what the party is now, and it's been trending this direction for a couple of decades, well before Trump. He just made the rot more overt.

(83,904 posts)Thanks, TwilightZone.
Makes total sense.
Itll be quite an adventure to watch how things unspool among Republicans through the next days, weeks, and months. We dont know ANYTHING now, frankly. Seems to me we have to watch and assess over time. Let reality settle in. And THEN watch what they do.

(10,421 posts)was that not only did the National Enquirer catch and kill bad stories about Trump -
they created fictitious stories about his political adversaries during the primary and the general election to smear his adversaries.
It was not just the sex stuff getting buried.
There was a media organization working for his campaign but not being acknowledged in the FEC accounting whose purpose was to publish lies about his adversaries to also deceive the American people.
I do not think the media has rung the bell for that crime enough. You can't just dismiss this as a sex coverup - but sex coverup seems to be the way many Americans understand it. If more Americans understood that smearing part, I doubt as many would be as dismissive of this crime.
