At that time, TSF was in a media-political battle with then-mayor, Ed Koch (April, 1989). TSF wanted to give the image that HE controlled the City, not the Mayor. He was usurping Koch any chance he could, e.g., fixing Wollman Skating Rink in months, not years. Also getting into the city papers with even trivial events. Koch tried to respond but TSF had a bigger mouth and more media attention.

"The Central Park Five"/Rape was TSF's chance to make his mark. Defending a helpless young woman jogging in Central Park. Railing against a horrific crime. Attacking the criminal justice system for not meting out the most severe punishment. Buying full-page ads versus having a quote published and forgotten. It was all about Trump, not the victim.
