Texas Supreme Court rejects challenge to abortion lawshttps://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/31/texas-supreme-court-zurawski-abortion/
The Texas Supreme Court has unanimously rejected the most significant challenge to Texas new abortion laws yet, ruling Friday that the medical exceptions in the law were broad enough to withstand constitutional challenge.
The case, Zurawski v. Texas, started with five women arguing the states near-total abortion laws stopped them from getting medical care for their complicated pregnancies. In the year plus it took to move through the court system, the case has grown to include 20 women and two doctors.
In August, a Travis County judge issued a temporary injunction that allowed Texans with complicated pregnancies to get an abortion if their doctor made a good faith judgment that it was necessary. The Texas Office of the Attorney General appealed.
The Texas Supreme Court overturned that ruling Friday, saying it departed from the law as written without constitutional justification. While the opinion was unanimous, Justice Brett Busby issued a concurring opinion that left the door open to a broader challenge to the law.

(7,848 posts)and been horribly maimed, rendered infertile, etc. It's a travesty that will not stand! One of the hardest things we're going to have to do after winning the full sweep this year, is reining in these secessionist states like Texas, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, etc. They make not be saying the word "Secession", but when you deny the supremacy of the Federal Government, in opposition to the Constitution to which you've sworn... there is no other word (other than traitor).
We worry about reining in the Magats. We've got more than that. We've got to put the South back down again. Remind them they lost the first time, and they lose this time, too. Would like to do it through the law, but these states are now just coming out and saying "screw you. We're gonna do what we want to do, no matter what the Feds say. We're going to ignore the Feds." You cannot have a "United States" with outlaw states like these doing whatever they feel like doing!
Maybe we can help it sink in by denying them the money blue states give to help out the red states. Maybe a few "climate change emergencies" won't get the funding as fast as they want (if at all). I really hate to think of anything that hurts the common person in those states, but then again... way too many are right behind these "leaders"...
So I don't know how we're going to get out of this. But we have to put a stop to it, else women, POC, LBGTQ+ among any other "fringe" group are going to have NO RIGHTS in the end. Besides, it just chops my jaws the way they talk about us and our country! I am Woman; I am proud! I vote every single election... national, state, and local. And I'm not alone. Our voices WILL be heard, and this time Biden and his administration better listen closely and draw us in for ideas on how to fix some of this crap. Not just push it off as a lower priority, like everyone but us women did for decades! I got so tired of being told I was hysterical about this crap. Just look at us now!!!!
