"SNIP..............
Trump said:
The single biggest threat, not global warming, when they say that the seas will rise over the next 400 years, one eighth of an inch, you know, which means basically have a little more beachfront property. Okay. Think of it. The seas are going to rise. Who knows? But this is the big threat. I watched Biden the other night.
Its the greatest existential. He loves that word because its a big word. And he thinks, you know, he thinks he knows he doesnt even know what the hell the word means. He goes, its the greatest existential threat to our country. Global warming.
According to a 2022 NASA study, sea levels are projected to rise at least a foot over the next 20-30 years in the US. The rise will be even higher in Southeast and along the Gulf Coast. The country is not going to have more beachfront property. The country will have what is described as catastrophic flooding.
Rising sea levels dont create beachfront property, and the levels are going to rise much faster than Trump suggested.

The story caught the attention of President Donald Trump after Eskridge also told the reporter that he loved Trump as much as any family member I got. About 90 percent of voters on the island supported Trump in 2016 and 2020, and Trump 2024 flags fly from fishing shanties and greet tour boats as they pull into the docks.
As Eskridge tells it, he was out crabbing when a fellow resident told him the president had called to talk to him. President of what? Eskridge said only to soon hear Trumps voice on the other end of the line at home. He said Trump told him that he also believed that rising sea level was not a threat to the island, and that the residents had nothing to worry about Tangier would be around for hundreds of years to come.
The story exploded. Soon Eskridge was on national television onstage at a CNN town hall telling former president Al Gore that he had lived on the island his whole life and the sea level didnt look any different to him: If sea level rise is occurring, why am I not seeing signs of it? The erosion he could see.Gore said a big challenge for scientists was being able to translate the threats of climate change in an understandable way so that people can see the consequences in their own lives.

When mar a lago has water lapping at its doors will he appreciate it? Even just a little change means more flooding. I guess if you want to pay more for less insurance coverage its great.

(11,971 posts)He said "basically you have a little more beachfront property." In addition to being a completely ignorant take on climate change by implying that is the primary concern, that's also precisely wrong geographically speaking. The more sea levels rise, the less beachfront property there is, not more.

The fans of Trump find his comments as not dangerous but merely more self-validating. When you think about the deal Trump offered to oil giants, it doesn't matter if he accepts climate change science or not, he affirmed his presidency to enable them for money.

(2,292 posts)After sea levels rise to a great enough extent, I don't think the new waterline would be "beachfront". It'd more likely be "marsh-front", no? Not really conducive to building on or around. Seriously asking.
Granted, barring human interaction, in a few hundred (thousand?) years there might be a beach again. I'm just not sure. Sometimes a biome is a result of unique circumstances. If you clearcut a forest you don't necessarily get the same type of forest back...

(7,799 posts)to want to build a barrier wall to try to stop flooding:
...
A permit application for the wall, filed by Trump International Golf Links Ireland and reviewed by POLITICO, explicitly cites global warming and its consequences increased erosion due to rising sea levels and extreme weather this century as a chief justification for building the structure.
The zoning application raises further questions about how the billionaire developer would confront a risk he has publicly minimized but that has been identified as a defining challenge of this era by world leaders, global industry and the American military. His public disavowal of climate science at the same time he moves to secure his own holdings against the effects of climate change also illustrates the conflict between his political rhetoric and the realities of running a business with seaside assets in the 21st century.
...
Trump snatched up the golf resort from a distressed buyer in February 2014, after a winter in which an unusual number of severe storms hit the west coast of Ireland. The businessman immediately took an active hand in advancing and promoting his Irish investment.
...
The statement acknowledges one Irish government study that assumes a steady rate of erosion through 2050, but argues that the study fails to account for the effects of climate change: If the predictions of an increase in sea level rise as a result of global warming prove correct, however, it is likely that there will be a corresponding increase in coastal erosion rates not just in Doughmore Bay but around much of the coastline of Ireland. In our view, it could reasonably be expected that the rate of sea level rise might become twice of that presently occurring. As a result, we would expect the rate of dune recession to increase.

Officials say proposed 38,000-tonne sea barrier could damage sand dunes at Doonbeg resort
The climate crisis just became more personal for Donald Trump, after authorities in Ireland rejected an attempt by his Doonbeg golf resort to build a wall to combat rising sea levels.
The planning agency An Bord Pleanála said on Wednesday that the proposed 38,000-tonne rock barrier at Doughmore Bay could damage dunes that straddle the golf course in County Clare, on the Atlantic coast.
Trump International Golf Links Ireland Enterprises Limited, which is owned by the US presidents family, wanted to build barriers to protect fairways from exceptionally heavy storms and rising sea levels evidence of a changing climate.
