"SNIP...........

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) tried to walk back comments suggesting he has inside info about Supreme Court justices being “deeply concerned” about Donald Trump’s criminal conviction, saying “of course I haven’t had conversations with the justices.”

He added: “I just know their character, their personality.”

Normally that's how it works.

But you can always make an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court and ask them to take it before state appellate courts rule. Jack Smith attempted to get them to do this with the immunity ruling. He knew time was critical and was hoping they would quickly dispatch it. Ha.

You do need a compelling constitutional argument. Which is lacking here, but that never stopped his lawyers before.

And timeliness mattered, as in an election, Trump’s lawyers could appeal to SCOTUS directly.

However, Sotomayor has discretion on this case since it emanates from her circuit, and there would need to be 5 justices to override her decision.

A case just was heard this way wrt to the inclusion of Trump on the Colorado primary ballot. Again, normally state law and state issue, but SCOTUS intervened at Trump’s request. And they intervened expeditiously.

I think he was getting some blowback because his statement came one day after Chief Justice Roberts made the following statements about a request from Durbin and Whitehouse asking for a meeting to discuss Alito's ethics issues.

“I must respectfully decline your request for a meeting,” Roberts wrote in a letter. “As noted in my letter to Chairman Durbin last April, apart from ceremonial events, only on rare occasions in our Nation’s history has a sitting Chief Justice met with legislators, even in a public setting (such as a Committee hearing) with members of both major political parties present.”

“Separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence counsel against such appearances,” Roberts continued. “Moreover, the format proposed — a meeting with leaders of only one party who have expressed an interest in matters currently pending before the Court — simply underscores that participating in such a meeting would be inadvisable.”

Mike coming out about how cozy they are with the Supreme Court Justices looks exceptionally bad in light of Robert's statements.

'Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.'

Hm. That 'against your neighbor' part might change things a bit, don't you think? For instance, if you don't consider someone a neighbour, then bearing false witness is 100% acceptable.

Hey, I didn't write the obscenity; I merely point out the parts people leave out, often conveniently. Sort of like how liberals always point out that 'well-regulated militia' clause that the gun-humpers conveniently leave out of their version of the 2nd Amendment.
