📌We were told at the time, it was a harmless, isolated incident. Those of us who know Baraboo knew better. It has a history of the worst kind of racism known to man.
📌On Friday, a white man rushed the stage of the HS graduation in Baraboo, and grabbed the town's school superintendent by the arm to prevent him from shaking hands with his daughter.
📌The superintendent, Dr. Rainey Briggs, is a Black man.
📌I type this because I know this kind of disgusting incident isn't isolated in America. WE know the horrors that have been unleashed and given freedom to infest and divide us since that terrible day on November 8, 2016, when we were told by the White House that there were good people on both sides of a KKK rally.
📌This is what MUST be defeated once and for all in November, or to hell with all of us ...
Here's the terrible story.

Father of Baraboo High School graduate blocks superintendent from shaking daughter's hand
The man ran onto the stage just after his daughter had been handed her diploma and began working her way down a line of school officials shaking hands.

The father of a Baraboo High School graduate forcibly pulled the district superintendent away from his daughter as she crossed the stage to receive a congratulatory handshake during the schools graduation ceremony Friday.
The man, who is not being named to protect his daughters identity, ran onto the stage just after the girl had been handed her diploma and began working her way down a line of school officials shaking hands.
Before she could get to district Superintendent Rainey Briggs, the man, wearing a white polo shirt and baseball cap, grabbed Briggs by his right arm and pushed him away.
Thats my daughter, the man can be heard saying in video of the ceremony by TV43 Baraboo.
Briggs can be heard telling the man, You better get up off me man. Get away from me bro as staff working the graduation and three Baraboo police officers including the school resource officer intervened. At one point, a voice can be heard saying, I dont want her touching him.

It is not lost on me that the local article totally omits mention that the Superintendent is Black.

(17,577 posts)I had a good friend who was completely and totally anti-Obama. Constant rants on Facebook and elsewhere about how we couldnt dare let him be elected or God would strike us down, etc.
The sweetest karma possible for me was a post from her son saying, Mom, Im voting for Obama.
So, sometimes seeing the worst brings out the best. Lets hope this is one of those times.

(4,229 posts)I feel the ability to destroy peoples lives and career for whatever we deem a penalizable transgression is toxic behavior. If toxic behavior is borne out of having power, then we are all susceptible to toxic masculinity, toxic femininity, toxic whiteness, toxic blackness, etc. and such power wielding is primarily a human quality rather than simply a white male quality.

(7,309 posts)And I don't think any teaching or education will change his mind. People like that already have been taught and embraced hate and nothing but a serious societal comeuppance will make any impact.
I say, name and shame him and if he loses his job, so be it.

(2,332 posts)It's for the people watching. If they see that others find a behaviour unacceptable, they will be less inclined to repeat it themselves.
This is how we teach those raised by wolves what constitutes acceptable behaviour.
Other than the fact that doxing is already out of control, it also creates a potential danger for other family members (such as the daughter) who are nothing like the father. The Left should never encourage doxing.

(7,309 posts)As am I. The only thing that works, is publicly shaming these people.
Besides, he outed himself. He got arrested for disorderly conduct and is now a matter of public knowledge.

Too many ugly racists in rural WI. I know. I live here and I've gone door to door trying to talk to voters about President Obama. Too many had no fear of absolutely waving their whole asses out in front of me and my team. No where near Baraboo, either.

(17,428 posts)Sorry, but sure, there are racist in every state in the nation, but, and it's a BIG but, the racist asshats in blue states don't have the power of the state behind them.
Know what the difference between a racist in California and a racist in Alabama is?
The racist in Alabama has the power of the governor and State Legislature behind him.
That's a HUGE difference.

(690 posts)Would you support her being named and shamed until she puts out a public statement apologizing for what happened? How about a campaign to get her unenrolled from the college she is planning on attending? I mean, since we know she's a horrible person as you said, that is usually the next step, right?

(2,332 posts)That these will be the only charges. Over and over, we see these cases where the first charge(s) might be something light, but then the DA does the, you know, sane and professional thing of waiting for the police to complete their investigation. And then, lo and behold, here comes a more serious charge(s).
Why don't you wait a bit to see how the case progresses before assuming this will be the only charge?

(85,151 posts)And implies that it doesn't have to do with race. Where did the race narrative come from?
XorXor
(690 posts)It's strange for anyone to act that way for any reason. The "I don't want her touching him" sentiment seems like something a racist might say. It might not be about race, but it's hard to understand why the father would behave like this just because he felt the person he confronted didn't do their job. There's a level of emotional irrationality in these actions that makes racism seems plausible.
The only other possible explanation I can think of is if the school officials did something terrible to the daughter. However, there's no evidence to suggest that.
SpankMe
(3,720 posts)The Wisconsin News article references that there was a lot of criticism of, and controversy surrounding, the superintendent. Also, a local TV news report claims that the parent was unhappy about the way the superintendent handled instances of bullying against his daughter.
That muddies things a bit if trying to characterize this as a racial incident.
I'm not defending the guy. Under no circumstances should he have gone on to the stage and touched anyone. I'm just saying that there's an avalanche of racial accusations going on here and in the Twitter posts being referenced. But, the local news outlets don't seem to be mentioning that.
John Shaft
(808 posts)And racism doesn't exist either, right?
NanaCat
(2,332 posts)Then that still wasn't the proper time, place or way to address it.
And why target the only black person there? Superintendents don't often have direct involvement with bullying in schools. Why not go after one of those white people around him who were probably working at the school and did too little about bullying themselves?
But, yeah, sure, it wasn't racism at all!

(8,103 posts)It's tough to get through, and those children deserved an unblemished celebration of their accomplishments. That man left an ugly stain on the entire graduating class and their families.
The look on that girl's face when she obviously realized what was happening was sad. She didn't appear to know what to do, so she exited, and remembered to move her tassel over. The movement of the tassel was a big moment for her, but it was lost. Her father didn't get to see that, because he was too busy committing a battery on an official.
He should have the charges upgraded to battery, maybe A&B, but that won't change anything. I like the way the woman at the podium controlled the crowd of graduates. What a shame this happened. It was a completely selfish act of one individual. I hope as time passes the memory dims. Maybe she'll make it to a college graduation, and her daddy won't be allowed to come, because, you know, she might actually touch a black person or have a black official congratulate her, and daddy might go berserk.
You'd think a guy could suck up his hatred long enough for his child to be honored with her diploma. What, no HS grad photos because he was in jail? What was he thinking? And, you know that kids want to celebrate after their graduation. Hers was probably ruined. Thanks, Dad. Asshole...
