As abortion and birth control continue to dominate state and national political debate, North Carolinas two leading candidates for governor seek to position themselves on the issues and each other in ways to ramp up support.
The Republican Partys nominee for governor, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, has previously called abortion murder a crime punishable by death in North Carolina. But now that hes running for governor, Robinson has sought to distance himself from past positions, saying he supports banning abortion after six weeks. Current state law is double that, with abortions allowed until 12 weeks
His Democratic opponent in the race for governor, Attorney General Josh Stein, says that current law is too strict. He says abortion laws should go back to the standards set by the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case, which was overturned two years ago. Under those rules abortions were allowed until the point where the fetus could be considered viable to survive if born early, usually between 24 to 26 weeks. That roughly coincides with the first and second trimesters of a pregnancy, which typically lasts 40 weeks.
But while the two candidates stances on abortion offer voters a stark choice, theres less clarity on what the governors race could mean for North Carolinians access to birth control in the future.
