Biden supporters mostly back him in 2024 election because they oppose Trump, poll finds

The Guardian

More than half of Joe Biden’s supporters are primarily motivated to cast their vote for the president in order to prevent a return of Donald Trump to the White House, according to a new poll.

Opposing Trump is the main reason to back Biden for 54% of the Democratic incumbent’s voters, the new CBS/YouGov poll found, up from 47% in a similar survey conducted in March, which was prior to the presumptive Republican nominee being found guilty of business fraud by a New York jury.

A further 27% of Biden voters are supporting the president because they like him – down from 31% in March – while 19% say that they are backing him because he is the Democratic nominee for president.

The poll comes as the Biden campaign has ramped up its rhetoric in attacking Trump directly in recent weeks, pointing to the former president’s felony conviction and string of past controversies. Last week, Biden said his predecessor is “reckless and dangerous” for complaining that his New York trial was rigged and claimed that he had been driven “crazy” by his 2020 election loss.

People seem to imagine that Parties are monolithic entities where a handful of people at the top can decree a new nominee. The rules don't work that way. Unless the RNC (now made of mostly MAGA types) votes to change the Convention rules, Trump has all the votes he needs.

maybe smart on his part not to have named a VP running mate yet. At this the running mate would be the only realistic replacement. He’ll appoint a VP that no one would want as President, thereby insuring he’s not pushed out.

These kind of push polls give a few options and mostly none of them are good.
In fact, the only options were probably only the ones listed above without one that says, "None of the above".
It's like asking, "Have you stopped beating your spouse lately?"

Like:
His policies are good for me (different than I like him)
His economic results are good for me
I am a lifelong Democrat and vote only D.

This poll had only one positive and many negatives. At least as I could read.

The problem I have with polls is too often you can buy the results you. Thats why so many polls are off as much as 15%. and some polls have completely opposite results. Another problem is that so many media act like the polls represent the truth even if the results are way off of last week's polls.

I am an anti-poll person because the results vary widely, and you can just make you your own results on the spot and be as accurate as most of them.

...unless you imagine that a significant number of people DON'T like Biden personally, but DO like his policies.

If you had bothered to actually read the polling results, you'd have seen that exactly the same question was asked of voters supporting Donald Trump. No push polling involved.

Is it just because everyone in the world is telling people all day every day that he is too old? People that think Joe is causing inflation and high housing prices are in for a shock when they find Trump’s policies will actually make things much worse.

Personally I think Joe is even better on actual policy than Obama. Hope that’s not too blasphemous!

Clinton was a master as showing empathy to the larger electorate. Biden is good at it one-on-one, but he doesn't have a compelling positive message (voters don't generally respond to a shopping list of achievements) for the entire nation.

Trump is a walking talking clown show. This is why Biden won in 2020. I assume no one that wanted to avoid the clown show wants more clown show in 2024. But we will see. The more shark tales we get, the worse I think Trumps chances.

It's a civics course platitude to insist the public must be offered something to vote for, not against.

Anger and fear are by far the strongest motivators to action, short of hunger and thirst presently confronted.

I don't think that is a surprise. I might have expected it to be a bit more than that. Since 2018's mid-terms, the dislike of the felon has been a huge factor in Democratic Party wins.

16. This is a stupid poll -- and I have only seen it used against Democratic nominees

There IS an overwhelming need to stop Trump. If people are forced to pick ONE reason many who "like" Biden would pick that alternative -- it does NOT mean they are not happy with Biden. Other polls -- which are somewhat push polls - ask whether you think Biden, who is in his 89s should run for a second term.

However, with this poll, I think the majority of people here - politically engaged Democrats - would agree that stopping Trump to preserve democracy is a very important reason to vote for Biden. This angered me more in 2004 where some prominent Democratic pundits, including Carville and Begala, pushed the argument that people were more anti Bush than pro Kerry. I could not have been more pro Kerry, but I was anti Bush from 2001 onward (First the tax cuts, then the wars). Given Kerry's convincing win of the primaries one could make the argument that he had more personal support than their candidate who did not capture the nomination in 1992 until June.

Why go over ancient history? Compare 1992, where Democrats rallied around Clinton - with no suggestions I can remember that he should be supported JUST because he was the Democratic nominee or that people were just anti Bush and anti Perot. Unlike either earlier Democrat, Biden is an incumbent and he actually has a record that ANY first term President would envy.

Polls and articles like this diminish the candidate personally. One counter to it is that the few times someone other than Biden was polled against Trump, they did worse not better. This would suggest that Biden IS the strongest candidate as well as the de facto nominee.

This is the type of comment that keeps me on DU. I thank you for that. You make insightful and important points.

The Magistrate made an important point (#14) about anger and fear as motivators. This is true some of the time for all people, and all of the time for some people. Yet that has to be put in the context of socio-political cycles, even if one does not agree fully with Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s timing. And as you noted per Clinton in '92, one of the three types of leadership can break that mold -- for charismatic leadership creates hope that is more powerful than anger and fear -- at least for a time. And is that not exactly why a little known Senator bucked the odds in 2008 to win the presidency?

I could go on and on ...... and no doubt will be discussing the points you raised as I talk to myself all day today! (grin) Again, thank you.

...the fact he isn't Trump is still the biggest, best, and most important reason to vote for Biden.

I'm very happy to have Biden as the alternate choice, so much so that it's hard to imagine that for some people it's a difficult and close choice.

But defeating Trump is the most historically pressing, urgent matter every put before the voters of this country. I'd happily vote for a bag of rusty hammers over Trump.
