Knowing in advance that he intends to make himself "President for Life", along with implementing all of the articles of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025...
Is this country going to observe Queensbury rules while getting stomped by a mob of rabid insurrectionists?

Metaphorical
(2,654 posts)is that I do not believe that either side will accept the win of the other candidate. If, as I suspect, Biden wins, demographics actually works against the Republicans having any real power after 2024 for at least another decade, and they will go to extralegal means to keep that from happening,including secession. If, on the other hand, enough states are suborned for Trump to win electorally (I do not see him actually winning the popular vote in any scenario) then I think that the West Coast, the Northern tier states, and the East Coast will secede, or at a minimum not recognizing his authority in any way.

(23,673 posts)I think that if Biden wins, Republicans will not accept the result. Whereas if Trump wins, most Democrats will accept that he won.
But
if Trump wins, what remains to be see is how people respond to what he does once back in office.
People as a whole generally dont respond well to large scale assaults on their way of life, like the ones proposed under Project 2025. That even includes Republicans who may have voted for Trump on the assumption that, I didnt think he was going to do that to ME.
Of course by that point it might be too late. But FWIW I think secession by blue states is 100% not going to happen.
Metaphorical
(2,654 posts)I think that the Blue States in general will engage in passive civil resistance, but will view secession as a last resort, probably about the time that Trump declares himself president for life and starts targeting the blue states in revenge. If Trump regains the White House, it means that the GOP has taken over all levers of government, and their behavior in general is to disenfranchise anyone that they see as threats.
I'm hoping you're right, and indeed, I think it is unlikely that Trump will win. I'm just not as optimistic as I'd like about that assertion,
Especially with the certainty that if it happens, it is already too late.

(5,246 posts)how to respond?
So, the nation should accept (a) elimination of the income tax and replacing it with tariffs (huge economic disruption within the nation);
Internment of homeless;
Deportment of millions because of their immigration status (probably only the brown people, not so much the white ones);
Using the military to enforce laws within the blue cities (that will definitely change our view of the military and the military has never been noted for their views on civil freedoms in occupied territories);
Accepting the MAGA intolerance toward POC, Gays, etc.;
Promoting the re-introduction of Jim Crows laws as legal again;
And, one has not even touched on the Rights hatred of women and their rights;
Shall we tolerate Trump/GOP/Putin putting their political enemies into prison or killing them (once he starts that - its a whole new ball game);
Laughing, I wouldnt put it pass Trump to sell Alaska back to Russia - for enough money in his personal bank account;
We might be lucky if all that happens is the nation decides to split.

(23,673 posts)They've stated ahead of the election that they're going to do it, and if they win, they will claim a mandate, and they will go for it.
It's not unprecedented. If you want to see evidence of right-wing politicians doing really dumb shit while the people that voted them in sit there and stare while they do it, the best most recent example I can think of is Brexit.
The Tories are about to get wiped out in the UK, and one of the reasons is because of all the lies they told about Brexit and how it would benefit the country. They managed to pull off that charade for quite some time, but now even Conservative voters realize that they've been had, and Britain is in way worse shape than it was before.
But Brexit actually happened, and the damage has been done. It's too late for them to take that back now and make things like it never happened. I guess that's what I mean when I say "too late." If Trump wins and Project 2025 goes into effect, massive backlash from citizens, whether at the voting booth or through protests and civil disobedience *might* eventually put the country back on a more sane course -- or we might end up more like Russia, with a police state and massive crackdowns on dissent.
Either way, it will be too late to stop all the harmful policies they put into place in the meantime.
