(4,226 posts)The war has displaced most of the Gaza Strips population, killed tens of thousands of people and pushed the enclave toward famine, its infrastructure in ruins. The Israeli military waged a punishing campaign to eliminate Hamas after the group, which has ruled Gaza for 17 years, attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing an estimated 1,200 people and abducting more than 250.
But while the majority of Palestinians in Gaza blame Israel for their suffering, according to polling conducted in March, they also appear to be turning their ire toward the militants. In interviews with more than a dozen residents of Gaza, people said they resent Hamas for the attacks in Israel and war-weary and desperate to fulfill their basic needs just want to see peace as soon as possible.
If Hamas wanted to start a war, they should have secured people first secured a place of refuge for them, not thrown them into suffering that no one can bear, said Salma El-Qadomi, 33, a freelance journalist who has been displaced 11 times since the conflict started.

(23,925 posts)I've wondered from the start why there hasn't been more anger directed at Hamas from protesters. Even if not equal anger, SOME anger, just as some Palestinians have always felt toward Hamas. As the protests have gone on and more protesters profess that they actually support Hamas, that hasn't been altogether surprising.

The true believers doing the actual fighting... I have no idea if they are able to be convinced. Laying down your arms might be a tough sell if you've seen your sister executed by the Israeli military...
(I realize you can make a similar argument for the Israeli soldiers, too.)

In a separate interview with Channel 12 News scheduled to air on Friday evening, Shem recalls how Hamas terrorists abducted her to the Strip during the Islamist groups Oct. 7 massacre at the Supernova music festival in Israels northwestern Negev.
The floor was splattered with blood and I yelled in pain, I lost my arm! she told the networks primetime Ulpan Shishi program, according to a clip posted to X (formerly Twitter).
He [a Hamas terrorist] started touching the upper part of my body. Suddenly, someone grabbed my hair, pulled me in a car and drove to Gaza. I felt like an animal in a zoo.

(3,944 posts)A post on the official "X" account of the Israeli government. It has been deleted. I found it's still up on the Israeli Embassy in Lithuania account.
In case it's deleted too, I am pasting the content here.
Many Gazan civilians participated in killing, raping, and kidnapping Israelis on October 7.
It is also reported that Gazan civilians were paid by Hamas to hold hostages captive in their homes.
Hamas is intentionally involving the civilian population of Gaza in its war crimes.
The world must condemn this in the strongest terms.

(10,018 posts)Too bad they started a war by raping, torturing, burning, decapitating, amputating, and murdering truly innocent civilians.
Too bad, in the words of their leaders, they worship death instead of life.
Too bad, in the words of their leaders, they have promised to continue to attack Israel until all Jews are dead.
Too bad they put civilians around military targets to increase the number of "innocents" killed for propaganda purposes,
Too bad that they still hold over a hundred kidnapped human beings who are being starved, raped, tortured, and abused.
Too bad that the billions of dollars sent there as aide was funneled into weapons, tunnels, and enriching their leaders to the tune of billions each.
Too bad they see martyrdom as a goal, even for their children.

there are no innocent civilians, not one, she said. [Innocent civilians] dont exist.
She told Channel 13 that she didnt really believe she would be freed until I got in the IDF vehicle, until I crossed the border into Israel.
Right before she was handed over to the Red Cross, they stuck a camera in my face and said Say that we treated you nicely, that people in Gaza are nice and good. What else was I supposed to do?

(4,129 posts)thinks all civilians are Hamas? Well, I can understand that, because the only contact they had with Palestinians was as a captive. I doubt their opinion carries that much weight, and a stated opinion doesn't necessarily mean you are committing war crimes. If they grabbed up a rifle, and shot every Palestinian they saw, you'd have an argument, then. This argument is thin, thin enough to see the hate through.
question everything
(51,610 posts)What type of crimes are these? When you vandalize a private home of a museum director, when you accost an elderly couple on the way from a synagogue - what type of crimes are these?
When innocent people are being used as human shield, who is committing a war crime?
Will not hurt to view the whole picture.

I was choking on my own tears
During Shems 54 days in Hamas captivity, a veterinarian operated on the bullet wound she sustained to her hand at the music festival, her aunt said late last month.
There was an operation room. No anesthesia, no nothing. I was choking on my own tears. Then he looked at me and said, Enough, or Ill send you down to the tunnel, Shem recalled in the Channel 12 interview.
Same article quotes her as saying she experienced a shoah.
She's right.
She experienced a modern day Mengele with his "I'll send you down to the tunnels".
Fuck that guy! He's in on it.

(51,610 posts)JustAnotherGen
(37,475 posts)That she THEN said it was genocide? Or am I misreading their quote?
ETA - Another snippet from the article I linked to:
(JNS) In her first television interview since being released from Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip four weeks ago, Israeli Mia Shem opens up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of Palestinian residents of the coastal enclave.
Its important to me to reveal the truth about the people who live in Gaza, about who they really are, Shem says in a preview of an interview with Israels Channel 13 News, set to air on Thursday evening.
I went through a Shoah, Shem told the broadcaster, adding: Everyone there [in Gaza] is a terrorist.
It's the statement regarding genocide in the OP - that is misleading - correct?
question everything
(51,610 posts)Others suggested Mia Shem and they never agreed nor denied.
The reality is that there is a reason that Hamas is considered a terrorist organization and the other side is that many, including in DU consider Israel as colonialist.
Honestly, I think that posting the OP as is, never elaborating is like shou Fire in a crowded theater.
