I remember reading Hillbilly Elegy, and have since scanned some of the interviews he gave after its publication. I remember his criticism of TFG way back when too. Funny, those clips are harder to find.
Why he ran for Senate has been a mystery to me, but I think it is becoming clearer. Vance is by his nature a mini-TFG. He will use anyone for his personal profit. Hillbilly Elegy was controversial. Pretty much bashed his family and everyone with addiction problems. Mind you his short-lived not for profit employed a specialist with ties to Purdue Pharma, and had little to show for its efforts.
He is telegenic, a quick talker and comes off as well-informed. You have to be well-prepared to argue with him. He is a veteran, served in Public Affairs, graduated Yale Law school, worked with republican politicians, worked with Peter Thiel as a venture capitalist. He is smart and dangerous.
I believe he is using TFG and I dont think TFG knows it. Vance is running for president, and unlike Mike, he has the brains to work around TFG to run the show. I think he is likely the VP nominee, will carry the cognitive load, since TFG is unable, and unfortunately may juice up the GOP in Ohio. Sherrod Brown has a great record, and leads in the polls so far, but this might be an X factor.
Lets hope the opposition research is on it.

(20,124 posts)Because Vance said something truthful about him early on, and it was not flattering. I dont think TFG can look past that.

(7,260 posts)But unlike the other sycophants, Vance will exert real power. TFG may be the face, but I think his cognitive decline opens a door that Vance will walk through and TFG might not even recognize it. TFG will read his pile of news clippings while Vance powers through the policy initiatives. Do I think Vance wants the POTUS label? Yes. But he is smart enough to know when to make his move.

(13,093 posts)With Vance as VP and their plan to have Trump fire 50,000 federal career workers at the highest levels and fill federal agencies with Trump sycophants, the leaders of the Heritage Foundation will gave unprecedented power. They are far mire dangerous than Trump because they have the brains, the money, and the government know-how to literally decimate the federal government.

(27,055 posts)They ARE dangerous on an order of magnitude greater than any other RW org besides the Federalist Society. And if they work in concert (which they in all probability are), we could be in for some dark times in a GOPee/fascist regime.

(3,052 posts)TSF henchman will come streaming in , quickly putting Project 2025 in place. They will park tsf on golf courses and begin running the country the way they choose. They'll bring in donny when they need him to sign things but they'll keep him out of the office. When his dementia takes over, they'll use the 25th ammendment to put him in a nice quiet facility and the vp will take over

But MAGAts are asleep, and will remain clueless.
They've been suckered into avoiding WAKEFULNESS - you know, woke. It's actually a good thing to go through life awake, and a stupid thing to go through life asleep like the repubes are demanding.

Two quotes from Timothy Snyder's excellent piece:
"Vance likes to get in front of microphones, puff out his chest, and present impotence as masculinity. There is guile in this performance: the manly pose substitutes for manly action. A tough guy à la Vance returns to the safe space of provoking cultural anxiety by choosing enemies within his own country."
"He clearly knows what he is doing: just before each outburst, you can detect a quick moment of calculating pleasure around his eyes. As he gathers himself, he looks, just for a split second, like someone who is about to tell a joke that he very much enjoys."
All in all, YUCK.

(7,260 posts)Anticipates questions and is prepared. His tone can make the most absurd assertion seem logical. Its what struck me about the interviews regarding his book. There are many still accessible. If you dont stop to think he is shoveling bull you miss a chance to challenge him. People get sucked in, much like George Santos. Hes just smarter.

(418 posts)He's rattles off total bullshit and comes off as smart, smooth, competent, and he's on TV a lot. None of these are qualities il Douche wants in a running mate. He want's someone who will silently do his job for him while he "Makes America Great". He doesn't want someone who will actually take credit, or who might upstage him. I think he'll pick a toady. Someone he was thoroughly belittled in public who now bends over backward to kiss his ass.

(7,260 posts)You may be correct. However, This isnt the Trump of 2016. He is sooooo pi$$ed that he is not POTUS, that I wonder if he would just brush it aside. Winning back the presidency so important because of his legal problems and his cognitive abilities are declining. He might just slip up and make a decision that runs counter to his previous tendencies. Vance knows it too. Will take advantage. I think he can play TFG. Just my opinion

(129,151 posts)like when he tried to chastise the CBS journalists for fact checking one of his lies on Springfield immigrants being illegal. That will make a great ad. He lies. Then is surprised he got fact checked and said something like "I thought it was agreed you wouldn't be fact checking the debate".
I hope ads of all of Vance lying go out ASAP because Vance was smooth and his likeability went way up. But it was all false.
